At this point its become apparent that writing her own music is at least as important to her as being a performer.She's probably got melodies/partial arrangements/lyrics swirling around in her head all the time.
Face it-she's not doing much performing at the moment so writing is an important outlet for her to have.Like you said she probably already knows the basics of a piano and now she has the inspiration to carry it a step further and use it as a writing tool.
