It's just I never thought of him as a 'philosopher' until I had that discussion with my friend.
BTW on the one hand, I tend to believe in 'fate' or determinism, on the other, I would like to believe there is always choice, You determine your path, your life is what YOU make it.
So it's a conflict for me 
Silly me! Yes, I now remember that you've mentioned Campbell and your comparison of Haley and the Hero's Journey (which, for me, was a bit of a stretch). And, I suspect that choice plays a far greater part than "determinism" -- at least, in our day and age.
