Description of the venue from a review of the show the prior night:

Arriving at Hotel Café is like finding a hidden gem, tucked away in a cozy Hollywood alleyway. As I approached the back door, an attendant with a small tin box was collecting the ten-dollar covers. He asked whom I was there to see. Unsure if “everyone” was an appropriate response, I felt a bit panicked. Luckily, there was a flyer on the door listing the night’s acts and I coolly replied, “Molly Cottrell.”

From the shabby alley, through the doors, I was whisked away into a world apart from the land of commotion and excess. There is a series of dark secluded seating areas illuminated only by modest candlelight. Walking through the first two rooms you arrive at the music lounge and bar.

The lounge is warm and intimate. Exposed brick walls are canvases for the glowing white lights that cross them. The stage is a bright light set against the shadows of people gathered in anonymity. The bartender listens in on the opening remarks as if it is the grand act itself. Dressed in a #23 Chicago Bulls jersey with a denim vest and army camo shorts, you can tell this place isn’t pretentious. It isn’t about the show here; it is the talent that speaks.

...The night at Hotel Café was charming and authentic. One attendee says she likes to come because it “isn’t your typical cliché LA club. It’s real people singing real music.” It is a place of the locals. Some shout out to the performers during/between songs to voice their support for their friends. But most of all, the people there respect the organic musicality of the night. No one is on his or her phone. No one is talking too loud. This is a place where you listen.
