Haley and AI S9

Quote:Musically Inclined

HALEY REINHART
Impressing audience members and superstar judges alike, Haley Reinhart was a fan favorite on season nine of American Idol. After the release of her debut album, Listen Up!, in May, Haley’s schedule has been packed with worldwide travel, TV appearances, and enchanting live performances. We caught up with Haley to see what is up next for this rising star.

This is all very cool, nice, fun, etc. but people check your facts before publishing stuff. I'm pretty certain Haley was on season ten.

Well if it wasn't for Randy Jackasson & Simon Coward, Haley might have blown Lee DeWyze, Casey James and Crystal BowerWhiteSox out of the top 4 water in Season Nine.

True -- but not quite my point.

I wouldn't knock Crystal Bowersox in the least. IMO her voice is aptly "crystal clear" and pleasing too, and more importantly, every she sung every song with her whole heart and mind into the tale in the lyrics....

Crystal definitely had 3 or 4 covers of legendary songs where I'd listen to her cover before(or equally) to any other version of those songs... and a few others very very close. Her "up to the mountain" brings me to tears with chills every time I hear it. No sense playing the which artist is better than the other game...but gotta stand up for CB for the "blown away" part.

Both very special even if I almost always prefer present and foward looking songs than back looking songs these days (and Haley is so about the now and/or forward looking!) End derail.

Actually Crystal probably would have beaten the Lee, Haley, Casey James top 4 since the Chicago vote would have been split between Haley Reinhart & Lee DeWyze so I accept your point Tom and agree that Crystal was probably the best of that season.

Tom, I don't knock Crystal in the least, and, for her sake, I sometimes think it's a blessing that Haley didn't make it that year. Crystal is an extraordinary talent, with a painful, but extraordinary history. "Up to the Mountain" is not a song that I find musically worthwhile -- I guess that one's all about the message, and since I'm mostly interested in "musically" interesting, and there is absolutely nothing "musically" interesting to me about that song, I just can't connect. (It's message is too blatant and, thus, drives me away. Frankly, I think it's musically worthless.)

But Crystal performed a good many tunes on AI that I appreciated: she made Lee DeWyze sound good on "Falling Slowly" (think about that!); "People Get Ready" was amazing; I loved her "Midnight Train to Georgia."

Crystal writes wonderful songs -- and Crystal writes them on her own.

But what I really love about Crystal is, with the exception of "Farmer's Daughter," which was cathartic for her but I don't like the song, I love the songs she writes. "Mama" which, I've seen, was pre-"Farmer's Daughter" is exquisitely, heart rendingly beautiful.

So, ultimately, Haley and Crystal should not be compared to one another.

Mine oh Mine isn't half bad either, and anothe she wrote I take it. What's funny is that it by the lyrics, it is a very possitive song about the here and now yet some how it sounds sad and nostalgic. (which is like I said, less what I feel like listening to even if I think its really very good if I were in the mood for it.)

I won't get into the "up to the mountain" conversation other than to say that I love sort of "heroic" songs (that other's find cloying I suppose, but I think the aspiration is very real to the human heart) about over-coming and songs about mountains .

For instance, I love "Climb every mountain" in the Sound of Music (the one that the mother nun sings that most people find strange). I'm also very partial to some-what nationalistic songs too, which also rub lots of people the wrong way. (for a big contrast to "up to the mountain" , I love that german folk song that the Hitler youth kid sung in Cabaret "the stag in the meadow run's healthy and strong... ", and not so strangely, who can't be moved by the chorus of the french national anthem (Casablanca anyone ?).

While its certainly not about injustice in the least, or sad etc, just to draw a parrallel to Haley, "Walkin on Heaven", is one of my favorite songs on the Listen up album because it is slightly a song of protest (they call me crazy, some call me lazy but ) and an aspiration toward some thing kinda heroic (Walkin on heaven, streets we're on are made of gold ). I respect that some people (not saying you at all MEA, other people) aren't going to want to go there.

I could have chosen my words a bit better too. "I wouldn't knock" as I said wasn't right.. I could have left that out...you were being humorous and enthusiastic for our shared support for Haley.. just a bit defensive on my part sticking up for Crystal too.
