My Alternate 2012 Universe
I was watching the New Year’s Eves shows last night, and it struck me…what might have been. Here is my alternate Haley 2012 universe.
In early July, Interscope readies a video for “Oh My” with Haley and B.o.B performing with Irvin Mayfield and band in a dark, smoky New Orleans bar. The camera angle as the song starts comes into the club ala Scorsese in “Goodfellas” through the smoke and the noise to find Haley singing at the bar. The video starts in black and white, but then explodes into bright red color later in the song. Haley gives a sizzling performance in video.
In August, Haley announces at Lollapalooza that “Oh My” is her new single and Interscope releases it to radio the next day.
Later in August, Haley performs with B.o.B and full band on Leno and Letterman.
The single takes off. The radio adds are through the roof. The song gets extensive club play and a 12” dance mixes are soon released. Fun line dances to “Oh My” become an Internet sensation.
Meanwhile, “Listen Up” re-enters the charts and starts rising like a rocket into the Top 20 by mid-September.
“Oh My” hits 300,000 downloads on I-Tunes and is in Top 10 for many weeks.
In November, “Listen Up” is in Top 10 for first time.
Haley performs “Oh My” on Ellen, Jimmy Kimmel, and Jimmy Fallon shows.
Rolling Stone and Paste post 4 star reviews calling “Listen Up” an amazing mix of retro pop, sex and soul…and both apologize for not posting a review when it was released in May.
In early December, “Listen Up” passes 250,000 in sales and is promoted widely by Interscope as the sexiest stocking stuffer ever.
On New Year’s Eve, Haley and B.o.B perform “Oh My” on Dick Clark’s Rockin Eve with Ryan Seacrest from the Los Angeles location. Haley and B.o.B tear it up and crowd explodes with thundering enthusiastic applause.
In days following, Youtube views of the song from New Year’s Eve hits 100,000 quickly. “Listen Up” again enters Top 10 in the week after and closes in on 500,000 in sales.
Haley tells the press that she is rehearsing with a new full band in Los Angeles and hopes to be on tour in the spring. Rumors are she will open for No Doubt or Maroon 5. Meanwhile, Interscope readies “Hit The Ground Running” as her next single.
AHHHHHH…my imagination runs wild here…what might have been…. Just bums me out so much to see these auto-tuned artists and one hit wonders getting all the fame and attention…..
BUT…… here’s to hoping that Haley’s future reality will far surpass my day dream vision….
In any event, it doesn’t matter to me, I am a Halien for life, and wish her nothing but the best. Happy New Year to Haley and all of her Haliens…….

Sigh...if only...
But like Haley says "Everything happens for a reason"...
In the musical environment of today, what matters is she got the opportunity to fashion an incredible album done with a great amount of input from her. She also got tons of experience and to be able to show her stuff and network with many in the industry who by all accoumts are enthusiasticaaly impressed with her.
Sometimes we complain about the state of today's music, so we shouldn't be at all surprised that Haley's brand of unique musicality doesn't fit. What we do know is these last couple of years have laid the groundwork for a potentially significant career in music for Haley and we, her fans

RE: My Alternate 2012 Universe
I was just imagining last night that Hit The Ground Runnin' became a runaway hit after "getting into everyone's head" through the football and Nashville gigs. God I wish, that's still my favorite song, but I guess Listen Up isn't going to be as big as I hoped- at least right NOW!! I still have some hope, I guess I'm the last Halien Nut to fall from the LU optimism tree.
If she's looking to sign or has signed with a new label (I have a feeling she may have already picked), and she's wanting to record new songs, then I guess the next album WILL be the big break that catapults her into a household name. I just want it to happen for her so bad!! She and her family are so deserving and together, I really hope 2013 is the magic year...

Tusk--Excellent points! Thanks for your thoughtful response.
Sometimes the whole shebang with music is just luck. Haley said she decided at the last minute to even go to the Idol audition in Milwaukee. Her finishing third and not first or second on Idol allowed her the time to craft the vision that became "Listen Up", instead of rushing something out. With that CD, she now has a foundation of great music to build on for years to come and as you note, the experience, the relationships, and the networking from that effort will surely lead to great things in the future.
It's funny. I never even watched American Idol until Season 10 and only because my 10 year old daughter wanted to watch it. I liked Haley and rooted for her, and I kinda followed her after that. But when "Listen Up" came out, I was like...wow...this girl is the total package--writer, singer, performer--with charisma, radiant charm, a sense of humor, NOT a diva, such a positive, glowing attitude about things... (and let's not forget--drop dead gorgeous in a rare, classic old-style Hollywood way...). And, boom, I was caught in her Spiderweb...

I too am hoping somehow, some way, "Listen Up" will get the attention and sales it deserves. I still think one of its songs makes a hit movie soundtrack ("Spiderweb"), or is featured on Glee ("Undone"), or is in a TV commercial ("Let's Run Away" for travel ad). The Lumineers took off when one of their songs was used in a commercial, same with Feist ("123").
OR, how about this...another young artist in the early 70s put out FOUR good albums, and his name was Peter Frampton. Starting in 1972 he put out an album a year and it was not until his album "Frampton" that he had an album in the top 40. None of the other 3 albums ever rose above 110 on the Billboard charts and he had NO hit singles, although several were released.
But in 1976, he released the double album "Frampton Comes Alive" and it debuted at 191, but went to number one and sold 6 million copies and was the top record of 1976 spawning three top 15 singles--"Baby I Love Your Way", "Do You Feel (Like We Do)" and "Show Me The Way". ALL of these songs were on previous releases...but were now live versions.

So, let's jump a few years in the future (remember she is only 22!) and Haley has put out a few CDs and has a strong dedicated following. But then, she releases a live CD featuring many of her songs from "Listen Up" as singles. Perhaps THEN they will get the attention they deserve. I present "Haley Comes Alive".

So, a bit far fetched...does radio even play live cuts as singles anymore? But...you never know....
