RE: London calling?
I know this isn't true for everyone and I've been blessed with a strong immune system, but I always had the philosophy to not be so quick to "call a doctor to give me antibiotic".
I prefer to let my body do it's thing with it's anti-bodies. In the short term, it's uncomfortable, but I'm a firm believer that, in the long term, by allowing my body to use it's own resources to recover, I'm less reliant on the man made pharmaceuticals
I have never taken a flu shot and *cross fingers* rarely been afflicted with more than sniffles or a couple weeks of coughing and sore throats.
I think, as a nation, we are too quick to rely on the synthetics and pharmaceuticals for the quick fix, that appears to now have created stronger more virulant strains that are resistant to most antibiotics....

RE: London calling?
^^Tusk & (Sweet) Cherelann, generally I would agree with you, but flu shots do actually help. I haven't been "sick as a dog" since 2000, when I didn't get a flu shot (hadn't prior to that either), got sick, couldn't afford to stay home for the full time it would have taken to get well, and had monthly relapses for five months. (It wasn't fun!)
Since then I get a flu shot every fall, and haven't had the flu in 13 years! Since Haley's breathing airplane "air" quite a bit, it might not help her. On the other hand, it might!

Regarding 'airplane air' (or aeroplanes to the Brits ) and the UK, I remember making the trip to the States when my family finally said g'bye to the British Isles ( a veeeery long flight)... Many are probably too young to remember, but they used to allow smoking on board planes (an enclosed pressurised tube tens of thousands of feet in the air) .... Believe it or not
So it could be much worse

It could add to it but there are nasty virus's going around. With all the people she came in contact with who knows. We all seem to not pay as much attention to our health over the holdiay's and well traveling with peeps from all over the world - reminds me of an old Steven King novel..... one sneeze on a plane.....

RE: London calling?
^^Yes, I remember those days as well, although, fortunately I was never on a "veeery long flight" at that point. My short hops across the state were more than enough for me, thank you very much. (In a way, it's kind of scary to think about these things that were "lit" in a pressurized tube thousands of feet in the air!)
Haley may have just worn herself thin having fun over the holidays, but a lot of people travel when they are ill. And, all that wonderful, (germ filled) pressurized air in an airplane cabin just gets recirculated, to keep on "giving."

RE: London calling?
The flu vaccine is made from the remnants of selected viruses. The proteins trigger your immune system so it gets a head start on fighting off the viruses.
A 17-yr-old boy from this area died when the flu progressed to staph pneumonia.
Quote:On December 23, Max Schwolert played in the Wisconsin snow. On Dec. 29, he died.
..."It really kind of hit him on the night of the 25th," said Max's aunt, Michelle Schwolert. "[We] took him to the hospital, and from there it was very quick. There was a point of no return."
Quote:It's "definitely associated with the flu," says Dr. Matt Bush, emergency room physician at Medical City Dallas Hospital, of the connection between staph and flu."And one of the more common reasons that a healthy person would die from the flu."
Bush says the influenza virus weakens the immune system in some people so that staphylococcus bacteria that exists naturally in the nose and mouth can more easily travel to the lungs and set up a deadly infection there.
