So it appears Haley is not going to be a pop star like Katy Perry, or Beyonce, or Adele. But do we want that? I don’t... What I hope is that she is able to record many CDs in the years to come with a dedicated and committed label. If she breaks through with a hit song, that would be great, but my hope is that she builds up a catalog of great music and that she hits the road with a great backing band. With her amazing talent as a singer, I could see her doing CDs in different genres to make for an exciting show to see live, with music from a driving rock CD ala old Pat Benatar, to a jazzy soulful CD ala Norah Jones to a bluesy CD ala Susan Tedeschi.

There are so many singers and bands that thrive just on touring and releasing new music every few years. I am hopeful that she looks at singers with careers like Aimee Mann, Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, and many more bands than possible to list, and see that you can make a comfortable living in the music business as long as you put out great music and tour. Meanwhile, if she can write a hit song or two, she could become very wealthy just off of that effort.

At the very least, she has probably 50,000 hard core Haliens who will purchase whatever she puts out (and multiple copies for many of us) and if she can sustain that kind of fan base, and eventually build on it with touring, she should be fine for a long long time……

What you say is so perfect I could give you a big ol' HUG!! What you wrote are my thoughts exactly as far as Haley's career goes. I want her to be able to make a comfortable living with music and create wide ranging songs touching on various genres, but I never wanted or expected her to become a pop princess. The whole superstar scene strikes me as being ultimately hollow and soul crushing.

The concept of pitch needing to be “correct” is a somewhat recent construct. Cue up the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St., and listen to what Mick Jagger does on “Sweet Virginia.” There are a lot of flat and sharp notes, because, well, that’s characteristic of blues singing, which is at the roots of rock and roll.

“When a (blues) singer is ‘flat’ it’s not because he’s doing it because he doesn’t know any better. It’s for inflection!” says Victor Coelho, Professor of Music at Boston University.

Blues singers have traditionally played with pitch to express feelings like longing or yearning, to punch up a nastier lyric, or make it feel dirty, he says. “The music is not just about hitting the pitch.”

Of course that style of vocal wouldn’t fly in Auto-Tune. It would get corrected. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, many of the classic artists whose voices are less than pitch perfect – they probably would be pitch corrected if they started out today.

John Parish, the UK-based producer who’s worked with PJ Harvey and Sparklehorse, says that though he uses Auto-Tune on rare occasions, he is no fan. Many of the singers he works with, Harvey in particular, have eccentric vocal styles -- he describes them as “character singers.” Using pitch correction software on them would be like trying to get Jackson Pollock to stay inside the lines.

“I can listen to something that can be really quite out of tune, and enjoy it,” says Parish. But is he a dying breed?

“That’s the kind of music that takes five listens to get really into,” says Nikolic, of Poolside. “That’s not really an option if you want to make it in pop music today. You find a really catchy hook and a production that is in no way challenging, and you just gear it up!”

If you’re of the generation raised on technology-enabled perfect pitch, does your brain get rewired to expect it? So-called “supertasters” are people who are genetically more sensitive to bitter flavors than the rest of us, and therefore can’t appreciate delicious bitter things like IPAs and arugula. Is the Auto-Tune generation likewise more sensitive to off key-ness, and thus less able to appreciate it? Some troubling signs point to ‘yes.’

“I was listening to some young people in a studio a few years ago, and they were like, ‘I don’t think The Beatles were so good,’” says producer Eric Drew Feldman. They were discussing the song “Paperback Writer.” “They’re going, ‘They were so sloppy! The harmonies are so flat!”

Haley needs to keep doing what she's doing. I agree with this insight from one of the comments (paraphrasing): "Tastes change. Society doesn’t crave perfection, but something different."

Ah Yes!! My favorite lyrics: "I'll never Do-ake it alone" ... "Speed it Up" (two lyrics for the price of one!) So proud of Haley for orchestrating a great show. I really loved that cold rainy day! Wish I had purchased my better Hi-def camera in time for my video Tusk plugged in above. The instant Haley made it to the top 3, I got online to grab a bunch of free admission tickets to Arlington but the closest I could get to the stage at that point was the left terrace. When my wife said the Wheeling Park District Commissioners were given a dozen "Orchestra Pit" tickets and would we like a couple?? - As Tusk would yell: "HELL YEAH!" I ended up putting some extras up on ebay for 99 cents and got rid of those plus gave 4 others to my friends who didn't get in before they were sold-out in about 15 minutes.

You didnt film the beginning of her talking, but I loved when she said "Can you come jam with me, mom and dad?" I thought that was so sweet! I have her saying that on my video and I think mine has a little better sound quality which is weird, since I was so far away from the stage. Should I post it?
