The Coming Light



Crashing waves surge within an internal sea
Where black rocks, craggy and sullen,
Hang with heavy darkness--
White foam is swallowed in
Bottomless cracks.

Gray air hangs damp and curtain-like,
Smothering the darkling shore
In sheets of stinging rain
That feels as icy and
Sullen as death.

Lost and without direction, screaming birds
Reel and drop above aching stone,
Some drawing so near the cliff's
Raw face that stony teeth
Tear them from the sky.

All is rage and fury and aching desolation
A rampaging freeze gripping the
World with gray vice fingers
That grasp and claw and
Shred the light.

Light does shine dimly and bravely against
The dark and hungry storm,
Unraveling the onyx air with
Delicate precision and
Persistent energy.

Shine on, you small steadfast tower,
Shine with the glow of hopeful
Energy that pushes against a
Mindless, empty fury with
Tiny fists.

Push outward into the night air,
Force back the darkness with
The glow of a false dawn,
Until the true dawn
Arrives.

AllHipHop.com: On your debut album – Listen Up! – you co-wrote every song except for “Free”. As a singer and a songwriter, reflect upon a specific time or place in which you fully recognized each talent. And between the two, which skill comes most naturally for you?

Haley Reinhart: I grew up in school doing a lot of poetry – mostly slam poetry – and anything that would let me get my feelings out. I started writing songs in middle school, but when I give myself the time to sit down, and reflect, and feel, and let things come out, I find that it’s very easy for me to do. I just have to give myself the chance to do so. I have always been a real busybody. Even when I was back home in Chicago, I would make so much time for my friends, and I was just all over the place. When I sat down and just took a moment of solitude, it came really easy – especially melodies. Those would just come in my head constantly, and I would try to get a voice memo down or something immediately. I had hundreds and hundreds of them on my phone until the phone broke.

In "Other Musical Subjects", I posted that the Beatles' album, "Please Please Me", just turned 50, In thinking of a reply to MAE's post, a rhyme came to me....

"Please, please me -- oh, yah -- as I please you."

Thanks, Tusk, my friend, for reminding me that I'm as old as Methuselah -- perhaps, older.

On the one hand, it does make me feel even older (than I already feel) that these early Beatles tunes that I knew as a kid are now "50 years old."

It's a good poem, Tusk. I like it. I'm not certain how I feel that my candidness regarding how ancient I feel was your inspiration, but I do like what you did with it.
