Whenever I hear a song performed that was made famous by another Idol my mind won't allow it to be better so I didn't care for Amber Holcomb's "Valentine" over Melinda Doolittles or Isabelle's "God Bless The Child" over Haley's (especially Haley's NOLA & Carnegie Hall performances of it). Shuba Badula's "Born This Way" was a frantic disjointed mess of Lady Gaga's song. I got chills when Angela sang, and Nikki Minaj was observant with her "You make love to the song" critique of Kree Harrison.
Judges: Keith had some pleasant insightful remarks, Very impressed with Nikki's judging abilities, Randy is still spittin' out the same old crap, and Mariah (maybe because she was last to speak) had little to offer.
I share your assessments almost right down the line.
I have developed a tool for dealing with the "not as good as" thing in my mind... that allows me to listen more without feeling the need to compare... sometimes.
Kree's version of "up to the mountain" was very different than Crystal and Kelly Clarkson's versions of the song. My favorite by far was Crystal's yet really the others were excellent and different. Crystal encompassed a sweep of history, of faith an redemption... sort of epic. Kelly's was equally soulful and yet took on a more looking to the future soulfulness.
Kree sung the song in a beautiful way, that seemed like a message of "personal peace" of maybe "living each day well" . Kree's felt like a somewhat less impactfull .. yet equally important resolve and sort of graceful and flowing instead of being monumental. Not my personal favorite version but it was super in a different and fresh way.
As for the my funny valentine, I share your thoughts entirely. Amber's wasn't nearly what Melinda's was.. yet it wasn't really a different approach. I'll go even farther and say I don't think Angela had any concept in her own mind about what she was trying to say with the song. It is a funny song.. but why sing it if it doesn't mean anything to you ... or can't convey your emotions about the song ?

Actually if Idol had to cast a badass rocker chick and actually let her rock on the show my life would be made. By badass rocker chick I mean someone who rocks f*cking hard. No Idol girl rocker they've had so far was what I'm looking for, not Allison, not Carly, not Sioban, nobody. This is the kinda girl rocker I want to see on the show:

Wow that was invigorating, but there's no way any one that 'heavy' gets into the voting rounds of AI...the closest thing to a female rocker anywhere close to that on AI would be someone in the mold of Spitfire, Pat Benatar
(BTW, when I saw the title 'Love Bites', I thought it was going to be a cover of Judas Priest's "Love Bites" LOL )
BTW...I don't listen to country music, but my 'favorites' of the females so far is Janell Arthur and "Kree for Me"...so unless they keep appealing to my 'non country' sensibility, might be a short AI season for me.
It's like I'm a carnivore at a vegetarian buffet (with all these ballad/country singers  )

Im loving the judges this year. I sometimes wish these judges were on Haley's season. I think Mariah and Nicki would've loved her and Keith doesnt seem overly biased towards any contestant and just judges based on the performances at hand. He would've treated Haley a lot more fairly than Jlo and Randy did.

Every protagonist is defined by their greatest enemy. The greater the enemy/challenge, the more epic the tale. It is the epic confrontation that creates the mythologies that enhance the drama of the story.
Haley started as Cannon fodder, besides her natural born talent, it was the unfairness and sometimes OTT criticism of Haley that, in some part, rallied voters to push her all the way to 3rd.
"Haley's Journey" wouldn't have the same complexion or drama had it not included her not wilting at the attempts to break her spirit. That she got back up time and time again, provided the AI audience an irresistable underdog to back. It was a major reason she got the votes she needed for her push at the end (as well as the epic performances that thrilled the S10 audiences)
I like these judges (so far) better than last year, but as Haley has said, "everything happens for a reason" and there is no guarantee that without her overcoming negative critiques and surviving elimination that she would have had the same amount of support.
I think if you ask Haley, she's fine with how it turned out. If you look at how she is currently navigating her career, there's a good chance she would have little if no control over her album had she won. No guarantee they would not be shoving pre written songs down her throat for the album (as a winner that has to put an album out right away). No guarantee she would have writing credit on all but one of her songs (credit that will pay as future investment)
(Also, don't forget, the best thing Steven Tyler did during his stint in AI was to give Haley an Ally in the fight....replace him with any of the new judges, no guarantee Keith Urban or Nicki would have picked up the banner)

You and others have expressed my own thoughts well.
I think Randy's slightly better performance was because he was stealing coherent thoughts from Mariah (or thats what Mariah kept saying) ... and going fourth all the time left Mariah with less to say without being repetitive.
A few other personal thoughts of mine:
Randy still being Randy still bothered me(as I read it bothered you too)
... stupidity and worse often. Once he said. "I didn't like it.. it was bad" What the #### does that mean , and who cares? Gratuitous insults and negative opinions aren't being "tough" .. they're being rude.
I suppose when he tries to give advice it's even more stupid ("top of your range" "needed to put some runs in there" to Haley made no sense with the MJ song).
Still maybe he's not qualified to be a judge if he can't say coherent things like " I would have liked you to connect more with the audience in the middle" or "that could be a fun song, but you didn't put the punch in the lyrics I'd like to see".. thats the way to say "it didn't work for me" and actually add something. Who cares what he thinks if he cant' say why he thinks that way.. and no need to be rude to be critical... people can understand that a judge didn't like something by what they didn't compliment someone on and reading between the lines. No need to sigh and look angry unless they were unprofessional.
