It’s become Hollywood and the music industry’s favorite new parlor game: star casting reality TV talent competition judges. But with an increasing number of beaten-down A-listers limping away from these judges tables with bruised reputations and dim career prospects—albeit a fair amount richer—and the shows themselves barely seeing a benefit, it may be time to call game over.

...Aguilera left The Voice for the current cycle to focus on her music (she’ll reportedly be back in the fall). That album, Lotus, posted her lowest first-week sales ever. The only single to make any kind of dent from the record, “Your Body,” peaked at a paltry number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100. She suffered through the spate of negative press about her so-called bitchiness and being overweight while judging The Voice presumably so that her music career would benefit when she left. Clearly, that didn't happen.

I think working and successful celebrities are starting to catch onto the sense that the notoriety they get from these shows, may actually negatively impact their primary career..... If they do, they don't want to risk looking bad by alienating an Idol's fan base with a negative critique, it might have real life impact to their careers...

Unbiased, tough love truthfulness would be my first requirement for a 'true' judge.

I don't know-it hasn't hurt J-Lo and it probably gave a boost to Aerosmith at that time.I can't see why it will have any negative affect on Keith Urban's career.It certainly hasn't hurt Adam Levine or Blake Shelton to be on The Voice-and its probably helped Shakira

On the other hand, being on the reality shows mean they have much less control of how they are perceived, which is important to both women.

"Good Music" is subjective, can we say that Lopez' "On the Floor" was one of "the biggest hits of her career" because it was good music?

For sure.I'd never make across the board assumptions that the main reason they had a dip was because of being on a show.Britney was a failure as a judge on X Factor-she brought very little entertainment value or judging prowess to the show and for the year she was on she was rated number NO.1 by Forbes for the top earning woman in music.
