RE: What is your favorite Live Haley performance?
My favorite live performance, without a doubt. None of her performances of it have topped this first one, in my opinion. I don't know if it was the enviroment, or the intimacy of the venue, or what, but it's just so mellow and serene. Love it.

I love this too, this is the one I've kept on my iPod. Her voice is so clear.

I've always liked this acoustic version of Free. Part of it may be that I think Haley looks great.
There was a period Haley really had it going with John on accoustic.. up through the Stage it performance.. then it ended or stopped or went into hiding or ?
There is no question Keith has a distinct Jazz style.. to a degree he's creating his own sound that he brings to haley's songs and knows the jazz standards etc.
Haley might have been a niche playing live for indie bands with the John on accoustic guitar .. not likely to have landed any gigs in Las Vegas though!
Miguel ... I've been looking for that one at the restaurant on my own online.. ...... figured I'd find it soon enough and obviously didn't do a good enough job browsing the forums..
I also find that Wild Horses one of my favorites... so graceful.. the song is a beautiful song.. but the song itself is a bit too metered for my tastes.. such a great perfomance of it.
But past those great peformances but ones I'd grab ?
My favorites.....
How do they put it on the radio shows ? Desert Islands -- if you were stranded and had no way of getting any others etc (usually those are a list of 3)
3) Santeria at stageit? (... it always makes me so happy ! ... so very very happy and proud ... and by its sassy and playful making light of things and a hyperbolic expression of taking things in your own hands.. then the silly flight of fancy in her scat)
2) God Bless The Child With Irvin Mayfield. -- slur the words all she wants.. in the end for me.. a musical expression of marching to the beat of ones own drummer.... with a strut and a gusto, matching humilty and humor... overreaching and falling just short, then falling back to saftey in a wonderful cascade.
That song, as peformed.. by the two of them.. emphasizes those emotions and view of the world.. struggle to find ones own way in the muddle and put your chin up and head high and don't worry about the rules that are trying to be put on you.... yes .. that peformance says all that an more to me, in the play between them.. in the stretching beyond hopes at times.. but showing that the flight down from going a bit too high can be fun in itself... : )
....
I'd say...
1) Idol Benny and the Jets... probably would have been the original one had I never heard of her as a performer. Knowing the whole story and her personality etc, I'd choose the "Victory Celebration" version. I have no bitterness about it.
That was a wonderful end to the season for me. The official end was irrelevant and I didn't even think about it. I did turn in the next week for the very fun variety show with all the contestants back together singing with stars (tony bennet et all)
(Song itself starts at 3:45 so cut to there)
Haley's was the best Victory Song I've ever seen on idol !
OOH But they're weird and they're wonderful ! what an anthem to personal pride of the individual!
-----
And yes... I think that some that see an "attitude" in Haley.. actually have evidence beyond the cheap Idol edits.
We can share what a warm and helping person she is .. how she is actually humble in the way I find humble to mean.. to admit ones short comings.. and poke fun at them
But... I do think , what I've expressed about the above songs.. and that I see, and that I LOVE, are things that many other people also see and dislike. They don't like people who are the own judge of themselves...even if they are fair judges in admitting short comings.. the very idea that people define their own sucess in ways that are indifferent to other's paths they choose for themselves(and not critical at all, just happy that others suceed by their own terms you don't seek to aspire to)... well .. that pisses many people off...
Now.. I don't think many of you see it like I do... or to the extreme.. but some people who speak badly see it as I do.. but they don't celebrate or laud it, but find it unsettling. Me... ? thats why I love her and pick those songs I find nurture me most that way. WOW TOM:That's was a very long post and ¿You know what? These time I'm agree with you (may be you can read my mind? and in the other hand
after read your Paul Mc.Donald post I'agree too with that.
Only our big love for Haley(and her talent) give us patient and hopes about H.E.R.some day succes

I keep editing it.. hard to get that much out right the first dozen times. I'd never get my thoughts out if I waited for it to be perfect the first time I say it outloud!
Hey.. thanks ( lol and thanks for the gentle ribbing !)
I had to take on some thoughts I wanted to express triggered by that "Harry Connick Junior" thread.
I try to talk about the great part of that God Bless the Child here . By bringing up what I loved about my other two favorite performances,I try to sort of support what some people might see me too much into that ONE performance in the club. There is an underlying style of Haley's I appreciate consistently.
My thoughts also tried to touch on the almost impossible thoughts about of what a musical artist can do for people that simple words without the inflections are hard to define.
Line from Santeria "what I really want to say, I can't Define"
That Harry Connick thread also referenced Haley's "attitude", and different tastes. I tried to hit that too at the end. I needed to say something about that.
I have the theory that some jazz lovers are put off by these peformances of Haley because they don't personally relate.. and perhaps are even put off .. by the "rakish" attitude. How can they appreciated how perfectly she expresses an attitude they find "indulgent" . The message often does say .. "to indulge" . (enough) .
Jack London had a character use the line "Another bit of yeast in the great forment" .... a captain that sort of roared back at the winds he faced. Not everyone likes Jack London either.
----
I had things to say about legitimate ways to select performers for a show that weren't about talent per-say. I tried to take that on slightly in the "Paul Macdonald" thread.

RE: What is your favorite Live Haley performance?
I forgot this one. "Free" is my second least favorite song on the album, but this was so beautiful.
Tom22, I think you've almost hit the nail on the head with why Haley was considered "unlikeable."
It wasn't that she was "her own judge." It's that she was a beautiful, talented, CONFIDENT, young WOMAN. Men are allowed to be confident. Men are allowed to stick up for themselves if they are being unfairly judged.
A beautiful (and not beautiful like Michelle Chamuel..aka..underneath the glasses, fifteen layers of clothing, awkwardness and shyness..where you see her without her glasses and you go "holy crap.." but objectionably beautiful and knows it..) sexy, talented young woman is not likeable. It translates into "slut" and "bitch." Both of which we've heard Haley called plenty of times by idol fans..(And then Jessica Sanchez was called the same a season later.)
I could write a book on how sexist the Idol and the viewing audience is. Haley is a case study. She was casted as the hot girl. She was objectified from the start. The hot girl exits about 9th. Except this hot girl was extremely talented.
Irony being that Idol's own sexism worked against them. Because they tried to get rid of her, Haley became a victim..and suddenly a lot easier to root for. (Although still polarizing because a woman is not allowed to show confidence. I can't tell you how many times a female contestant, picked on mercilessly by Simon..finally had enough and stuck up for herself. Only for that contestant to be eliminated the very next night. Too many times for it to be a coincidence.)
Now of course, the above is almost necessary to have in the music world. (Although still polarizing.)

She got to perform with Myles and Slash on national television, and meet other big names in the business like Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones. All before her album was released. I think the performance itself is understated and beautiful.
If we're going to talk about this being one of her best live performances, then we should look at an HD example of it
Maybe too soon, but this one hits all the buttons for me, balls out rock, soft and subtle then pile driving bada$$ne$$. (and a gong). The green close ups really elevate the performance captured in the video to a surreal level that matches the dynamics in the song
Also, we've seen Haley, for the most part, 'solo'. This video, indeed, the entire BGDays set list, shows just how dynamic she could be fronting a professional band.
Apologies to John, Keith and Courtney, they never had any real chance to meld as a band, but .... what a stark difference, Haley's performance in front of Midnight.
On a personal level, this will always have a place in my 'favorites' file. The first time I heard Haley live, sitting feet away from her and feeling a unique elation, an unexpected, unreal 'out of body experience' from listening to her voice, live...
(Also, the audio engineering for the video was pretty good, at the time)
Also the first time I noticed the phresh keyboards of one Mr Keith Phelps

RE: What is your favorite Live Haley performance?
I like a lot of the ones already suggested. I don't really have one favourite but this is one I find myself always rewatching. This is still my favourite version of HOTRS
