RE: X-Factor 2013
Yea. The coaches are also entertaining without it being at the expense of contestants. (Interesting the choice of words the show uses for the contestants too. "artists".) I think people find someone like Blake more appealing than someone like Simon. Although I did prefer it with Usher and Shakira. (Not that it isn't lovely to hear Christina sing a bit every week.)
Carson is pretty underrated too. I have a soft spot for him, as I grew up watching TRL, but he's got a good personality, works well with all of the coaches, and does a good job. Ryan Seacrest is awesome, but anyone they get to host the xFactor with is awful.
It also doesn't feel as manipulated. I'm sure they have their personal picks. (CoughDanielle&michelle&Cassadeecough) but beyond preferential performance slots, they really don't play favorites the way Idol does. I didn't realize this, but apparently The Voice does not profit off the winner. Winning the voice means you get a recording contract with a label (Universal branch, I believe), but beyond that, the winner is essentially a new artist.
That explains why The Voice contestants haven't had as good of luck as some idol contestants (besides the type of artist The Voice draws.). The show isn't investing in your career afterwords. (Although the coaches might). But it also explains why it feels like people have more of a fair shot.
Idol went sour a little for me after Haley. I really disliked the way she was treated. I've expressed that before. (most of us have. And I think that's partially what makes Haley's fanbase so..protective..) Then with the subtle jabbing at Jessica..(The Jimmy slut shaming, JLO saying every performance she does sounds the same..when Jess was standing next to Phillip Phillips..) and Usher becoming a judge...I just switched over. And enjoyed it more.

On Caley's Stageit "Island in the Sun"
Quote:I just don't get why they together or individually can not catch the attention they deserve. The current American sweethearts on the X factor, Alex and Sierra, don't have anymore chemistry than Caley and they are not as talented. If these 2 could get some national exposure as a duo on the Voice, X factor, Idol I think they would take off.
For whatever reason, I have been less and less inclined to watch any of the reality show singing competitions... In fact, I'd guess I watch them even less than I did before I happened on Season 10 of American Idol....
Each time I've 'tried' to watch, I inevitably turn them off within 10 minutes or less, and go doing something 'better'. I don't know, I'm more turned off by the judges/coaches/mentors than interested in the 'talent' they want to impress me with....
I've watched Alex and Sierra, maybe one and a half performances, so I admit not having 'grown' with them as some may have, but it just appears to be an act to me, the shy sideways glances, the proverbial 'sending kisses through the air' way they perform.....
The affection that comes through with Caley comes from a deeper connection, they are not sending lovey dovey glances to each other (well, Haley isn't, anyway ), theirs is an 'understood' affection, not as blatant as what I see with A&S, their connection looks even more like an act in comparison...
Am I being too much of a 'homer' to think that maybe these two 'borrow' from what Caley have organically? The comparisons are hard to ignore, even coincidentally, that there is a market, for this type of pairing, an "America's Sweethearts" niche that needs filling?
Bums me out that A&S are receiving attention that more deservingly should go to two more talented, more organically connected, musically and viscerally connected individuals as there are in Caley
But, I understand, they (Caley) need to find what they are capable of doing, individually, before they 'marry' themselves ( ) to the idea of becoming a duet...

RE: Haley and Casey StageIt Performance - Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013
Hahah,
I like A&S. I think they sound nice together. I even think Sierra might be Haley's long lost sister. But they're a bit different than Caley.
For one, musically..they are much closer to what tends to be favored on these shows. As much as yes, Sierra's personality on television reminds me of Haley.. Alex is much closer to Phillip Phillips than Casey. (Although, IMO, he is more talented than Phillip.) So that this is really the result of a less talented Haley (whose personality is allowed to shine through on the television) dating Phillip Phillips and the two of them changing songs together. (which the audience tends to eat up.)
And I hate to say it, but Sierra has a much more "appealing" tv personality than Haley does. Haley's confident. Sierra is insecure on stage. (She'd never really performed in front of people, she's a dancer and hasn't really been a singer. Which is why she tends to cling to her boyfriend. ) Unfortunately, as unfair as it is..a beautiful confident girl is far less likable than one who isn't so confident to certain demographics of this show. And I don't think that's manufactured from Sierra. I think most people who aren't used to singing in front of people would be nervous in that situation. (And she's certainly grown some.)
I think you nailed it though. One pairing has romantic chemistry the other has musical chemistry. I like A&S. Their arrangements are often quite pretty. Their voices blend well together. But I doubt we'd see the spontaneity from them that we get from Haley and Casey because they are so musically connected.
Second, they want to be a duo. You can't really sell Casey and Haley as a duo when both are solo artists who like to perform together.
They're very Tim Burton/Johnny Depp IMO. (Haley and Casey)
I wouldn't be too jealous though. A&S are performing in front of a much smaller audience than Haley did. They're just the only decent thing from xFactor. What I wish, is that we got to see the itunes rankings, because according to the popularity bars, HOTRS is still Haley's most popular song. And I think that would have also opened up Haley to a lot more fans. Matt Schuler sang Hallelujah on The Voice a few weeks ago. It was a beautiful performance. But the last time I checked, it was still in the top 30 of the itunes..even after he left. At this point, some of that is from people listening to the itunes preview and buying it. This would have been good for Haley.
And speaking of, A&S I'd really love to hear Haley and Casey do a cover of "Say Something." It's such a beautiful song, and Haley's light voice and Casey's tone would sound beautiful in it. (The version of course, where the female gets a verse to herself too.)

Last week, in the comments section of Slezak's review of the X Factor, someone made the Haley/Casey connection (which was immediately followed by the comment that no reality singing show has ever had a duet as good as Moanin'. That person knew of what he/she spoke!)
While I completely agree with you, Tusk, regarding the A&S "lovey dovey connection" (what will happen to them when that fades?), I'd like to suggest that the "deeper connection" between Haley and Casey that you mentioned stems from a very deep and, likely, abiding mutual respect for the other's musical abilities.
That respect makes their (the Caley) relationship come across as sincere and, again lasting, whereas the A&S connection feels more like infatuation (and, perhaps, a contrived infatuation at that), and likely to wither.
Musically, Haley and Casey are light years ahead of Alex and Sierra. A&S just happened to audition for X Factor in what is likely its bleakest -- talent wise -- and -- also likely and hopefully -- final year.

It's the same for me. I have seen snipets of other singing competitions--but just can't get into them. Anyway, one singing competition per year is enough for me. More than that is overkill--takes the excitement away-- at least for me.
Once in awhile, I will watch a clip on MJ's. I did see that singing couple on that blog recently. The post talked about them generating big itunes sales. I was curious so I watched most of it--but didn't make it all the way through. It's seemed really fake to me. The candles--just the whole set up. Reminded me of when TPTB try to create "moments" on AI. From what I could tell-she played very basic piano and he was merely strumming the guitar. I was not impressed. I felt the same as you Tusk--not in the same league as Caley. (I left a comment saying so--lol)
The great thing about Haley & Casey was that it really did happen organically. They met on the show. They discovered their musical connection behind the scenes and eventually it showed up on stage. Moanin was just going to be a time-killer performance on results night. There were no candles. no "atmosphere" created. Haley & Casey just got out there and did it. And it took the show by storm. Wasn't a newer single like the on Xfactor. It was a song that I'm sure 90% of the audience had never heard before. But, their real musical chemistry, mutual admiration/ friendship & TALENT shown through. There will never be another season 10.
I get very frustrated that these two are not getting the recognition they deserve. I thought when they were still on the show that they should team up afterwards. But, of course, things didn't work out that way. They may only end up doing a couple of gigs together every once in a blue moon. But, even though it's been a few yrs since their stint on AI--they still create buzz when they do get together. Could you imagine the buzz if they had any real publicity?
