Woman hears for the first time

My Friend Joe Milne who suffers from Ushers syndrome, was deaf from birth. She had bilateral cochlea implants fitted which allow her to hear for the first ever, this is the moment they are switched on!

This hits me on a couple levels. Amazing as a scientific/medical story and certainly a personal one for Jo.

"The switch-on was the most emotional and overwhelming experience of my life and I'm still in shock now. The first day everybody sounded robotic and I have to learn to recognise what these sounds are as I build a sound library in my brain," she told The Journal.

"Hearing things for the first time is so, so emotional, from the ping of a light switch to running water. I can't stop crying," she added.

What an extrodinary thing that must be!

The Project Runway "main season" in 2013 had a contestant who gained his hearing after being deaf much of his life and he shared thoughts on it in various times throughout the season, especially after he was a finalist. His runway line was inspired by the experience of suddenly being able to hear.

You kind of "get to know" someone over the legnht of a reality show "season" if the editting is good and Project Runway is pretty good at feeding you personalities via their expressions and reactions as well as interview snippets.
