This week, we’ll take a stroll into neo-soul with songwriter and powerhouse vocalist, Haley Reinhart.
Emerging from a suburb in Chicago, the now 23-year-old’s debut album Listen Up! was released in the late Spring of 2012. You may know Haley from her performance on the tenth season of American Idol, where she landed third place.
Hold your skepticism- I understand. I felt it as well, only to be very pleasantly surprised.
Often in American Idol debut albums, it seems that producers try so hard to vend a new artist that the final product lacks authenticity. And while Listen Up! has its fair share of production, you get a lot of genuine originality from this album. Throughout the ten solid cuts, Reinhart manages to successfully combine modern pop with wonderfully catchy Motown, rock, and funk, with her beautifully soulful voice.
The top number, “Oh My!” is ridden with blaring horns and big attitude. It also features an appearance by rapper B.O.B., which admittedly fits the song well, even though it is obviously a promotional move by Interscope Records. “Free”, the following song and lead single, happens to be the only song on the record that Reinhart didn’t have a hand in writing, though it showcases her voice nicely as it grooves along in six-eight.
Sunny tracks like “Wonderland” and “Walking on Heaven” are definitely reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s. And, I must give praise to “Now That You’re Here” for tastefully implementing disco in such a way that I have no desire to stab myself in the ears.
Now, in my opinion, there’s not a bad track on this LP, so I would highly recommend listening to this album as a whole. But, I would also be happy to provide you with my favorites below. So, go enjoy this gem of a throwback! You can find her and Listen Up! on Spotify, as well as iTunes.
Haley Reinhart’s Top Five:
“Free”
“Hit the Ground Running”
“Wasted Tears”
“Now That You’re Here”
“Walking On Heaven”
Keep the music in your ear,
Constance
