RE: Sonic Bloom and collaboration with The Human Experience
LOL, I was gonna say, if you listen really hard, that's the sound of NUG raging at the gods she didn't know Haley was 'in town' Tongue
I think, like the visit to New Orleans, this was yet something else 'business related' so not officially an 'advertisable' appearance?
I will say, along w/ the folks who helped at the video shoot (Dannig/Avi/ vision artists/ acrobats) and these guys, a part of me is excited that she appears to be heading a non traditional way with whatever she's collaborating on.... Jazz was old school, what she is embarking on now, appears to be NEW School PLUS
Tusk, I've been chewing over your above statement (bolded) about "jazz is old school," trying to decide whether this was a "battle" worth waging. I've finally decided it is.
"Jazz" is definitely not "old school." Jazz constantly evolves, as other genres do. You are equating you're limited experience with Haley's connection with Mayfield's group.
There is a reason I never cared for Dixieland, which is that it is too frequently frenetic. But beyond that, what you've heard Haley perform with Mayfield isn't even Dixieland, it's mostly Big Band -- meaning the 30 - 40's period, hence your idea that "jazz is old school"..
Tusk, I fear that you've attributed you're limited exposure of "jazz" (which was far more "big band") to the totality of "jazz."
What you've heard Haley do with Mayfield isn't really what I consider "jazz," but I've remained silent because it was easier (choosing battles).
However now you've chosen to attribute "jazz is old school," to jazz overall, and I can't overlook this battle.
What you've been hearing via Haley with NOJO is "old school jazz" but that doesn't mean that "jazz is old school."

Granted..I always thought it was funny that people try to put music in so many little boxes..Musical genres are more like webs..with borders that aren't quite defined. Something that always bothered me about Idol's "you don't know who you are" critique. Haley knew who she was..she was a singer with R&B, Blues, Jazz, and Classic rock influences.
Mercfan, your observation of musical genres as "webs" rather than boxes is a very good one. Perhaps the tendency is a result of what happened in the 19th century when an attempt was made to "canonize" classical music. Composers often wrote in styles that overlapped the particular period that they wrote in, but they are still pigeonholed by period.
And, while I'm rather tired of the Big Band style, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. There's a reason for its longevity -- and you can never, ever go wrong with Ella!
As for newer jazz styles, there really are so many and so many artists, I don't know where to start. If the area you live in has a good radio station that plays jazz (and by "good" I mean it plays a wide variety, not something like "smooth jazz" which is often closer to elevator music than jazz), I'd advise that you listen to it.
If not, and you can listen online try KPLU's Jazz 24 @ http://www.jazz24.org/. (This morning is not a great example of variety, unfortunately. The artists may be current, but they're predominately playing jazz standards.)
Happy listening!

Mercfan, after listening to Jazz 24 today (hoping to hear one particular song that I have in mind that I consider more contemporary jazz, which they didn't play), I heard this song by Melody Gardot.
Melody has followed, I believe, a unique path into a music career. She was severely injured in a bike accident eleven years ago, and used music as therapy during her recovery/rehabilitation.

I find I like a lot of artists that seem to be "jazz influenced" (Corine Bailey Rae, Fiona Apple, Lana Del Ray..a lot of "Ray's" ) but I also feel like I don't know many newer more actual jazz music.
You're welcome. While I'd agree that CBR is influenced by jazz, I'm surprised that you think Lana is -- although to be honest, I don't pay much attention to Lana. (I'm so put off by the "spoiled, little rich girl who's daddy could buy her way into the music world" vibe that I dismiss her work without actually listening. And, well, I have a "high standard" bar, that what I've heard of Lana, doesn't come close. But perhaps, I should be more attentive.)
I pointed out Melody, because I happen to like Mira and because I think you like singers, but the song I was hoping to hear is an instrumental piece called Africa. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the group, which, if I remember correctly isn't so much a group, but individual musicians who decided to work together and produce a CD. It's gorgeous and haunting, but I just can't find it today.
I've been hesitant to mention Spencer Day to you, since he clearly fits into that "smooth jazz" category (if it's actually jazz) that I'm attempting to steer you away from, but the guy's got a gorgeous baritone voice and writes sophisticated lyrics (his foundation in the great American songbook shows in his lyrics). Check out Till You Come to Me and/or The Mystery of You on YouTube. The latter song is from a CD of the same title and explores a relationship gone bad, from start to finish. There isn't a bad song on it.

RE: Sonic Bloom and collaboration with The Human Experience
I resisted Lana for a while too. In fact, for a while, every time I heard "Summertime Sadness" I wanted to shoot the radio. (Played way too much) But I read that apparently that is actually a remix. It was reluctant, but after hearing the actual version of "Summertime Sadness" I listened to a few songs, and by the time I got to "Blue Jeans" it was "Crap..I think I like her." And although her voice isn't particularly great (she's more of a lyricist.) I hear the influence in phrasing and some of the sound choices. Maybe "Video Games" would be the best example.
It didn't help that I saw Lana as the..artist that interscope chose over Haley. They both released music at the same time..Lana was pushed, Haley put on the back burner. (Not really surprising given the type of female artists Interscope can sell..but I still noticed it.)
So she's ceratianly not at the top of my favorite artists list, she was someone who I saw as being influenced (like I said, mostly because of her phrasing and note choices) as opposed to someone like Ariana Grande who is a better singer (much better) but is influenced by pop, "divas" (not really a genre but I don't know what to call it) and R&B
And like I said, it's an "influence" thing. There are a lot of artists, like Gaga for example, that are influenced by jazz (although, I can clearly hear it in her voice) but it only slightly shows up in their music...I just find that, even if it's not obvious to me at first, I have a tendency to be drawn to singers who were Ella inspired.
Spencer has a really nice..smooth voice. But yea, it does seem to be the old "crooner" style.
