RE: Haley, Mark Ballas, BC Jean & Dylan Chambers - August 3, 2014 at Hotel Cafe
Thanks for putting those up Tusk. The original audio has a lot more good stuff in it. Percussion and bass for one, and a truer sound to the guitars. And a lot of detail and nuance in Haley's voice that is quite tasty. A superior listening experience.

At the end of WT Haley gives a brief nod to Elvis.

She often puts out little references that go right past the contemporary audience I'm sure. I recall her doing her Sally Fields imitation in the brief backstage interview after getting positive feedback for YRGAHOM on AI.

Dittos from me in the thanks to Tusk..
I don't check in here everyday so sorry for the delayed thanks Tusk (actually was up in the high sieras backpacking so.. I couldn't have checked in lol)
Enjoyed the post John..
... I liked the verbal reference call-outs..
Haley does this sort of thing endlessly... not that it isn't uncommon among true performers but its another sign of her love for the history of music and entertainment industry.
Not all current (or current in any era) singers share that love for history of the craft of entertainment but the greats usually do. I can think of Michael Jackson studying fred Astaire and one could read about all the celtic and classical musical references Jimmy Page and led Zeppelin used.
I guess what I'm saying is these verbal references are a sign of appreciation of history and a real love to listen to patterns of expression which can be used to say more by the power that made them iconic in the first place.
The audience doesn't need to really know the refrences for them to have value. While some of the quality of them is the "inside joke" part that you and I smile at, the whole reason those things are kept in memory is that they had a peculiar ability to show human emotions that still translate whether one is aware of the connection or not.
(the verbal wink .. by making it sound slightly like a parody is needed to keep it from sounding plagiaristic.
but think of that.. it shows how incredibly nuanced a human voice can be to both imitate, reference and show playful deference in two or three words.. just by little inflections that would take a number of paragraphs to pick out with phonetics I imagine (even if one knew phonetics on that level which i don't)

Maybe he could use one of her songs - that would be so cool
It would be nice. I haven't followed DWTS, but this past summer as I was following SYTYCD, I did notice that they seem to be able to use really current songs for the dances. Mind you, right after I'd come to that realization I happened on to an "after the show" interview with Travis Wall that his original show choice (that/some week) hadn't received clearance. But in general, clearing songs doesn't seem to be nearly the hurdle that it's always been on AI, for example.
