Burr is the star and (with "The Simpsons" scribe Michael Price) co-writer and co-creator of the upcoming Netflix animated comedy series "F is For Family," premiering later this year at an as-yet-unspecified date. "We wrote and recorded the episodes from like September to the end of November," Burr says. "But as far as like pitching the show, getting the team together, all of that ... We first sat down and took the meeting three or four years ago." In "F is For Family" Burr voices surly 1970s patriarch Frank Murphy, who happens to also be a horse. "Basically this guy Frank Murphy is based loosely on all the fathers of everybody in the writers' room. When we got all the writers together, when we were interviewing them, we just asked them questions about their childhood - stuff that happened to them and how their dad reacted - to try and get people who were coming from the same angle we are."

Your new animated show, "F Is for Family," is coming to Netflix soon. How did that project come about?

Well, the first thing that happened was that I took a meeting with Wild West Productions, which is Vince Vaughn's company. They just took a general meeting with me, and I threw out this idea for this cartoon that I had, and they wanted to do one, so they jumped at the idea.

You know, I was just going to make little five-minute vignettes about my childhood and just exaggerate them through animation. We (started to) flesh it out into a show, ... and then we just started meeting show runners. I guess Vince Vaughn and those guys set up the meeting (writer Michael Price).

I immediately liked Mike. ... You know, a lot of writers are very introverted, and he's not. He's got this great personality. He's really just a naturally funny guy and a great storyteller. He came onboard, and it just really changed the whole dynamic because he's an absolute force of nature, that guy. His work ethic is incredible. I really lucked out with those guys, Vince Vaughn and (Executive Producer) Peter Billingsley, getting Mike on this project.

What has it been like working on a show for Netflix?

Writing an animated show for Netflix is as free as writing stand-up comedy. ... I never thought I'd be able to get that level of freedom where it's like, "Hey, do whatever you want." Like, Netflix is actually saying, "Push it further, push it further." ... Artists are always looking at them like, "Aw man, they're always choking off our ideas," and (Netflix) is the exact opposite. They've been just unbelievably great to work for.

Renowned LA-based hard rock guitarist and established TV and film score composer Dave Kushner has upgraded his studio monitoring, choosing a pair of PMC twotwo.8 monitors.

Kushner, respected for his scorching guitar and bass work with Wasted Youth, Electric Love Hogs, Loaded and Velvet Revolver, has been working as a producer and composer from his own studio since Velvet Revolver's final tour in 2008.

"I had just had my first child," he explains from his LA studio, "and I thought, 'Well, I can work by going on tour as a musician, but I'm going to be away from home all the time'. So my plan B was to produce and compose from home."

A friend of Kushner's, Bob Thiele, had been contracted to create music for a new TV show for the FX cable network, Sons of Anarchy, and collaborated with Kushner on the music. Kushner co-wrote the series theme, which was nominated for an Emmy and won an ASCAP award. "That began to open doors," he explains. Since then, he has provided themes and scores for TV shows Detroit 1-8-7 (for ABC), Sullivan & Son, and Bill Burr's F is for Family (the latter pair for Vince Vaughn's Wild West Productions), amongst others.

In TV, in this niche-targeted, specialized era, who has a brand of “Lotsa different kinds of stuff that different kinds of people like”? Not any cable channels–broadcast networks. NBC, ABC, CBS. That whole vast-tent approach was supposed to be fading in the cable-TV era.

Except that the way Netflix views the streaming business is as the most capacious virtual tent ever. In its view, there is a future for a TV-maker that is simultaneously broad and niche: selling a service to all kind of people and demographics, but appealing to them with very specific programs. It sees itself as a broadcaster of narrowcasting.

In a strange way, this vision would use a radically different way of structuring and watching TV to recreate one of the oldest paradigms in TV: something for everyone! Netflix sees itself as the next NBC or CBS, but for an era where everyone in the family looks at their own screen instead of gathering around a single hearth.
