...there’s a normalcy to most of the conflicts Frank and his clan come up against, though F Is For Family is particularly good at mining its well-trodden ground for fresh laughs. A considerable amount of the credit for that should go to the ace voice cast, particularly Burr, Reinhart and recurring guest stars like Sam Rockwell as the free-loving, hard-partying Vic, a neighbor so liberated that the boxed-in Frank naturally detests him. These performers turn traditional sitcom characters into nuanced, often uproarious personalities, and the show soars because of it.

The series possesses a rare comic voice tinged with melancholy and mounting discomfort, one that delivers some gut-busting moments and other times makes the laughs catch in your throat. As the Murphys navigate through mishap after mishap, they in subtle ways grow both wearier and wiser. The show’s humor is grounded in the deep pain and existential ennui that hangs heavy around Frank and Sue’s necks – much like BoJack Horseman, the series reaches into dark corners and favors sometimes brutally harsh realities. While undoubtedly a comedy, its bleak world view and unflinchingly honest portrait of the American family hit harder than a lot of dramas.

In just six episodes, F Is For Family will certainly make you laugh, but its dramatic heft is so unexpectedly huge that it might also move you to tears. Though Netflix has bigger, buzzier original content landing around the holiday season, this one is an unexpected, much appreciated gift for fans of good television everywhere, as well as a terrific reminder that its streaming service home is doing more amazing things for the medium right now than just about anyone else.

Really glad to see such rave reviews for the show and for Haley. Hope there are more like it. Well I guess I know what a bit of my weekend will entail. Can you sign up for Nexflix for a month or is it a contact deal?

We started our first free month of Netflix and my wife & I have been binge-watching "Breaking Bad" ever since. Addictive (not that i can get addicted to anything like a vocalist or anything) but it sure is nice watching a series in sequence without commercials without having to wait a week until the next cliff-hanger.

I think we'll see an improved tweaking (not twerking) of Haley's acting skills in this series since her TV acting debut 3 1/2 years ago on 90210:

F is also for funny, as this animated comedy from Boston-bred comic Bill Burr dives into the tragicomedy of the early ’70s for the Murphy clan. Listen for voice work from Burr, Laura Dern, Justin Long, and former “American Idol” contestant Haley Reinhart.

I suppose one advantage of them having to explain who you are is that you get more newsprint. Although I would prefer to see "singer-songwriter Haley Reinhart."

Some of the Netflix originals are fantastic too.

I love "Orange is the New Black" but I don't know if that would be your cup of tea.

But you might want to give "House of Cards" a go. That show has Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. It's excellent.

You’d be forgiven if you think Bill Burr and Michael Price stole your life when they sat down to create “F Is for Family,” the new animated sitcom available Friday, Dec. 16, on Netflix.

At the heart of the very funny six-episode series is a classic dysfunctional family headed by an overworked dad with a short fuse, a mom who gets weary trying to keep the household on an even keel, and three kids who would try the patience of any parent, if only Frank Murphy had any patience. If it sounds familiar, it may be because you probably lived it.

The eldest of their three kids, Kevin (Justin Long), 14, is a moody stoner with a fondness for a band called Shire of Frodo. His younger brother, Bill (Haley Reinhart), is kind of a wimp and not the brightest bulb in the pack. He’s frequently and easily manipulated by his younger sister, Maureen (Debi Derryberry).

The show is funny, but a not-always-subtle flip side makes the jokes funny as well. Inevitably, we view it all through both our personal lens and through contemporary sensibilities. The Mohawk commercials, if aired today, would set off a social-media firestorm. At the same time, though, the Washington, D.C., pro football team continues to resist public pressure to change its name.

The more things change, as they say, the more we laugh, until we find ourselves asking if things have really changed that much.

That’s what keeps “F Is for Family” not only funny, but relevant as well.
