RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! New EP!
In terms of the "rights to the music" I'm not concerned at all. 75% is huge. Ole sets Haley up with other writers and producers, distributes her music..gets it put on football games and documentaries, of course they get a cut. They need an incentive too. The fact that they likely bought back Haley's songs makes me happy for Haley..I want them to be free for Haley to record again, if she would like (like say, the bridge to "Oh My"..) or just..in general..be part of HER song catalogue, instead of with a label she is no longer with.
As for writing, and cowriting..I think a guitar or piano skill might obviously come in handy for Haley. But I'd say more as a touring ability. If she can play the guitar or play the piano, she can take herself on tour, and not have to pay anyone to accompany her.
But when it comes to writing songs, I'm not sure I buy that, at least if she's going to continue to make pop music. Pop music has a lot to it, and as a result, even great song writers have co-writers. Mary Lambert, for example..I think is the best song writer of this musical generation, Eminem and Adele be damned, but when she was signed to a label and created a pop album, instead of simply a piano based album, she inevitably worked with co-writers. (Including Mozzella.) Similarly, Taylor Swift had a lot of co-writers on her pop album, instead of doing it herself with her guitar based music. Pop music has a lot of formula sand a lot of instrumentation too it. I simply expect co-writers are going to be a part of the deal for that, so long as Haley is writing pop.
And honestly, there could be a few reasons that Haley doesn't know how to play the guitar or piano. Personally, I find instruments with chords incredibly frustrating to learn. I grew up playing the flute and singing. One note at a time. Add chords too it and I want to throw things at people. If Haley focused all of her attention on singing, she might be similar. Also, isn't she more of a "play by ear" instead of through reading music..if that's the case, it might be pretty easy to see why she hasn't learned guitar. I did think she already knew how to play the piano..maybe just not well enough to perform in front of people?

RE: Ole signs Haley to New Worldwide Deal! New EP!
Another explanation of co-publishing...
Quote:Co-Publishing Agreements
The co-publishing agreement is one of the most important contractual arrangements in the music industry. It gives the songwriter a share of certain rights and income that he or she would not be entitled to under the standard writer-publisher contract.
For example, under the terms of an exclusive songwriter contract, the writer transfers the copyright of a song or songs to the music publisher and is paid 50% of all earnings received by the publisher from those songs. Under the terms of the co-publishing agreement, however, the writer sells and transfers only a portion of the copyright and retains the other portion for his or her own publishing company. More importantly, the writer receives not only the standard 50% songwriter share of all earnings but also a portion of the 50% that is normally reserved to the music publisher (the so called "publisher's share of income").
As a general rule, the co-publishing arrangement is usually available primarily to writers who have a successful track record of past hits, writer/ performers who have the potential of securing a record deal, writers who have a current recording artist contract, writer-producers and any other writer who has the bargaining power to negotiate such an agreement with a music publisher.
There are a number of basic sets of circumstances which lend themselves to the signing of a co-publishing agreement. The first is where the writer has had a number of hits while signed as an exclusive writer to a publisher and the contract is approaching its expiration date. Considering the writer's past success, the current publisher (or another competing publisher) will offer a co-publishing arrangement for all future compositions (and possibly past songs also) as an inducement to re-sign or sign as an exclusive writer.

Haley's had "hits" in terms of placements, not sales.

In reviewing the last article, I realized Ole already controlled the publishing rights to Listen Up!. Because she's credited as a writer on most of the songs, Haley is free to perform and record the songs again if she wants. I think she and Ole would have to pay her co-writers royalties though.
If anyone other than Haley performs the songs in some professional fashion, Haley and her co-writers, and Ole, are due royalties.
