Perhaps Haley has found a record label, or at least Ole has.

Canadian music publisher ole has taken a big step in the record label business with the acquisition of the Anthem Entertainment Group, the Canadian record label started by Ray Danniels in the mid 1970's that has issued albums by Rush, Big Wreck, the Tea Party, Ian Thornily, Bob & Doug McKenzie (Strange Brew), Ian Thomas, Coney Hatch, Moe Koffman and Steven Page among others. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The deal builds upon ole's opening of red dot, an artist develop label launched earlier this year with releases from Haley Reinhart, Josh Dorr and Josh Thompson.

Anthem was formed so that Rush would have more control of their work at home in Canada, and so other Canadian bands would have a home, as they could not get signed by the major labels' offices in Toronto or Montreal. Anthem's sister company is SRO Management, also run by Danniels and Wilson, overseeing flagship act Rush and other bands, on and off Anthem.

I got a Hofner Beatles bass for my 17th birthday and was obsessed with music and read Cream, Rolling Stone and Circus Magazine religiously. I wanted to learn any and all bass lines out of sheer sport! The more concerts I saw, the more I wanted to be up on stage. The Edgar Winter Group/Bad Company concert was the clincher for me. Years later, when I made it to the Maple Leaf Gardens stage in Toronto, I was on cloud nine! I was pretty much self-taught, all by ear and with the help of my bass teacher, Scott McCloud. Sadly, to this day, I can’t read music. I know my fret board, but put a piece of paper in front of me and I’m lost.

The president of (Anthem) – Ray Danniels – and I have been friends since 1982. He managed my first band, Coney Hatch, and signed us to Anthem Records, so I’m back where I started!! We spoke about working together off and on for decades after the Hatch broke up. I had several bands after that and a few U.S. record deals that eventually led me into producing and mixing other projects.

Pegi Cecconi, the Vice President of Anthem, is also a longtime friend and was instrumental in my working at Anthem. My job was to not only help bring in new clients, but to assist at Anthem Records with current clients, work with RUSH and develop new talent with the label, as well. I was fortunate enough to be offered the full-time A&R position…no making coffee or answering phones! It was my first “real” job outside of 20-plus years being a full-time musician/songwriter/producer.

I wear two hats minimum on the best of days. One is management and the other is label. As far as my day-to-day goes, a lot of it is instinctual and second nature from being in the business for years. Ray and Pegi have been instrumental in walking me through the early years on the other side of the desk. Their experience is incredible and I’ve learned so much from them. I hope that maybe some of my experience might rub off on some of the younger artists I work with, as well. I have high expectations for myself and I think that quality can be infectious.

With the management hat on, I just need to shake the cup and a different set of challenges face me each and every day. This could be anything from booking a tour with our various RAs or agents, working with road crews, working with other labels, approving photos, budgets, video treatments, merchandise, websites and more…you name it, we deal with it. Of course, dealing, meeting and/or touring with the artists and bands directly takes up a huge portion of my job.

On the label side, that’s pretty much RUSH 90% of the time. Anthem also signed Steven Page [ex-founding member of the Barenaked Ladies] recently. We have a few more releases coming up, as well. I deal with bands’ studio bookings, producer selection and liaison, engineers, mixing, mastering and approvals, etc. Most of the issues that are creative usually snake their way to my desk. Currently that team for RUSH is Nick Raskulinecz and Rich Chycki. For Steven Page it was John Fields.

Rockband, Guitar Hero, Apple, the RUSH iPhone App, ring tones, and www.rush.com have all been under my umbrella. I’ve had to educate myself to stay ahead of the curve with some of these things, yet other areas seem like extensions of how I was handling these issues in my own bands. I’ve also become the point person for most of the companies that have endorsement deals with our artists, such as Gibson guitars, DW Drums, Tech 21, Traynor Amplifiers and Sennheiser to name a few. In a strange twist, my job has kind of morphed into being front-and-center in maintaining corporate partnerships with a lot of these brands and products, as well.

This is pretty interesting. When I preordered Better on Itunes it did say that Red Dot was the label. Wonder what the difference is between Red Dot an artist develop label and Anthem??

One Ole press release says...

That makes it sounds like red dot identifies talent, produces recordings and, ideally, generates some buzz that captures the attention of major labels.

“As soon as I signed with them, the floodgates opened. I got my first cut [Columbia Nashville artist Casey James’ “Ready Or Not”] and I got offered my developmental deal with Sony, all within a week or two of each other. I went in and started recording my EP in February and March and we put it out in May (2014). It did pretty well. It went Top 10 on iTunes. We just got one of the songs (“All Or Nothing”) on The Highway and Sony just recently put me on RCA and now I’m label mates with my hero, Garth Brooks.”

...With Dorr, who also signed with CAA for booking during those early days, ole’s focus on artist development was once again demonstrated as the company recorded a number of demos with him which were purchased by Sony to upgrade the master recording.

Charlie Worsham joined ole in 2010. He released an album through Warner Music in 2013. "He grew his fan base initially through tours with country stars like Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift"

But I have to admit Ole has gotten her a few good gigs but Haley totally delivered which puts her in a really good spot right now.

While it seems like artists are the big gainers here, labels win too. They can get on with what they’re really good at, which is distribution and promotion, and get paid fairly for those services. It seems to me that a lot of what Haley needs and many expect from ole' are these label services. Some of the delay in releasing the EP may be that ole' just in the process of setting up it label services. Business models are changing and evolving and ole' may just be getting itself positioned to implement this component of the new music industry.

I wonder if Ole, who is kind of 'outside of the box thinking', who signed 'outside of the box thinking' Haley Reinhart, would consider some kind of business relationship w/ 'outside of the box thinking' Scott Bradlee?

Scott, outside of his social media and marketing aptitude, is an incredible musician. He impresses me as very sharp and his talent on the keyboards is now more instinct than learned.

I know he's proud of what he's built w/o a label or corporate influence, as he should be, but I wonder if there's a little bit in him that wouldn't mind finding out what It's like to have the resources Ole could provide?

I mean Scott's youtube videos include his interpretation of video game songs, and cartoon show melodies...he's got an instinct for that kind of musicality that for a placement company, such as Ole, could find very useful and profitable

I would definitely love to see a full show, just Scott and Haley, I think their synergy on stage could be magical
