Plus they have Lanyards now...at least they did for Australia. The ones I went to (UK/LA) I just got the paper wrist bands

Fuse Music Review: Postmodern Jukebox — Reverence for the Past, With a Dash of Irony

According to its stratospheric amount of YouTube clicks (over eleven million and counting) the most popular PMJ song is a version of Radiohead’s “Creep,” redone as a forties-style torch ballad sung brilliantly by Haley Reinhart. It’s not just a gimmick. The brooding alienation of the original is turned into a sexy, slow-burning anthem performed with a vulnerability that inexplicably turns into triumph. It also switches the gender roles; instead of being the passive object of desire, in this version it’s the woman who affirms her awkwardness and longing.

PMJ’s (post) modern update on vintage jazz reminds us that beneath all the glitz and glamour, the music is very much about female empowerment. The jazz singer might well play up her sex appeal, shimmying while decked out in fabulous costumes, but it goes beyond showiness and becomes a way of taking control of the stage and broadcasting the singer’s personality as boldly and confidently as possible.

When I saw PMJ’s concert at The Wilbur in Boston last Monday, I was glad to see that solid musicianship and playful collaboration made the songs work. The PMJ musical ensemble switched genres a dozen times over the course of the evening and never let the pace sag or become too loosely structured. Singing duties alternated from song to song and singers often changed verses within the same song. At one point, the drummer and the tap dancer challenged each other to a percussive duet, won in my view and by popular consensus by Sarah Reich’s nimble dancing.

After a night spent impishly deconstructing new songs by making them sound old, hearing the band perform a classic as originally intended proved that, for all their whimsicality, Postmodern Jukebox’s project is really about reverence for the sounds and styles of the past, not just mimicry for the ironic consumption of the present.

Last night’s Postmodern Jukebox concert at Zoellner Arts Center in Bethlehem gets my vote as the most fun concert of the year.

There’s lots of reasons. Here’s a few.

The energy at this sold-out show was electric and everyone – audience and band – seemed so happy. The audience cheered the moment band members arrived on stage. Emcee LaVance Colley promised a party and it was.

The music was just extraordinary as the musicians and vocalists put their swinging, jazzy, sultry, ragtimey retro spin on pop and rock songs – everything from Radiohead’s “Creep” to Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Up.”

Postmodern Jukiebox is one of those bubble up to fame phenomena, lifted up by Youtube and word of mouth over a few years. Created by Scott Bradlee, a pianist with a penchant for old-timey music, it’s a rotating group of musicians and vocalists. Last night’s vocalists were Abrams, fellow “American Idol” alums Haley Reinhart and Joey Cook and Sara Niemietz -- along with emcee Colley – and they all were excellent performers and singers.

...The two-hour show opened with the three female singers – decked out in glittery dresses, performing Iggy Azalea’s “I’m So Fancy.” The girls’ voices all were strong, somewhat husky but also they hit great high notes. Their harmonies were lovely and they moved in choreographed style. Backing them were a five member band – piano, bass, drums, trombone and sax.

Second up was Abrams, all gravely on Sam Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One.”

Niemietz then took a solo on Outkast’s “Hey Ya!” followed by a vampy Reinhart on Britney Spears’ “Oops! I Did it Again.” Reinhart stayed in the spotlight for Elle Goulding’s “Burn,” which featured the first appearance of the Tambourine Guy, who danced about like a human jumping bean, adding a dose of zaniness.

Cousin says as far as she knows, our relatives are safe....

We're praying for all the victims, including the hostages, affected by this horrible situation. We pray that your cousin is correct and that all your relatives are safe. Terrible that there is such evil in the world.

Kinda puts things in perspective. My wife and I both have been sick with a bug and feeling down about how crummy we feel, and I woke up thinking about Creep going over the 12 million mark.

I know Miguel has a no politics rule, but this might be a game changer that goes beyond politics. France's President Hollande has made an unprecedented move of closing France's borders.

How it relates to PMJ and Haley, we know they plan a tour that will match this year's number of shows, if not surpass the number of shows in Europe next year, so far 5 shows in France (20 in the UK). The types of targets including a venue approximately the size of venues PMJ performs, you have to wonder if some performers will rethink joining the tour?

That's not to say the US is any more safe from this type of attack, but this is the 2nd of this type in Paris just this year, they foiled a similar attack in Belgium, and the one where 3 Americans stopped a potential attack on a train, also in France.

So, how important is that -- learning to tap or dancing in general? I don't recall Haley doing much dancing. One of the recent tour videos with Haley dancing with Von Smith, seemed to be unusual as far as I can recall.

Do you think it would be a career enhancing move?
