Las Vegas Sun: Strip Scribbles: New plans for Rose. Rabbit. Lie.? Plus, WSOP, CES, whiskey

Enthusiastic jazz fans turned out in such force for the rotating pop performers in Scott Bradlee’s “Postmodern Jukebox” at Rose. Rabbit. Lie. in the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas during New Year’s Weekend that the format could become a mainstay of the theater club. “Postmodern Jukebox” has masterfully amassed 1.5 million subscribers and more than 315 million views on YouTube.
Ever since the avant-garde, “Absinthe”-type “Vegas Nocturne” departed RRL, the club now owned and operated by the Cosmopolitan has been experimenting with what might work best full time. Call this jazz, torch cabaret, scat and Gatsby era music and jazzy covers of current pop songs.
The crowd cheered and sang along to hits including Beyonce’s “Halo,” Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass.” The group’s founder, Scott, even took to the stage to perform a rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” at the request of fans.
In the restaurant section of RRL, another crackerjack band belted out jazzy renditions with an assist from two wandering sassy female singers and a handsome hunk of a hip-hop singer. Diners loved it, all happily setting aside cutlery to applaud loudly.
Cosmopolitan execs told me that the general-admission format whereby they removed seats, benches and tables for standing room in the club has ramped up the party energy. (You can still book a private box if you want to sit.) “We’re looking at all the options with standing room only,” I was told.
“We’re not wed to that yet, but it really pumps up the energy, and the crowd can dance to the music without being boxed in.” One senior exec added: “We’ve been really pleased with this format. We’re seriously looking at how to continue it as the new main attraction for the room.”
Scott and his “Postmodern Jukebox” musicians are on tour in Europe for 2016 due to their extraordinary YouTube successes, so the Cosmopolitan will be adding acts but keeping the jazzy format — much welcomed in a day and age of prerecorded music!
