Haley touring with PMJ -- Feb 2015 - March 2016 (& March 2017)

Haley's got an embarrassment of riches how popular her covers are....we still haven't heard PMJ perform Mad World live yet, and in show business, you give the people what they want....

an aside, I recently listened to Habits again, Haley's 1st PMJ cover.... I forgot about that buzz I got when I heard it for the first time (Oh oh ohhhhhh....)....basically, the song/event that preceded this still climbing trajectory Haley's been on the last two years

Well, just my opinion, but I wish PMJ would give Haley at least one more song a night--maybe "Black Hole Sun", or "Oops", or "Habits" or something. I guess they have to limit their solo artists to two or fewer songs, but when you have Haley Freakin Reinhart on your stage, I would want to see her sing some more.....

Another thing on my wish list--I wish PMJ would put out a CD/LP with songs that feature Haley. Right now, there are 8 songs with her as lead or part--Creep, 7NA, Habits, Oops, LoveFool, BHS, AATB and Mad World. So, maybe two more songs and you have enough for one CD or even better, an LP.

"PMJ Featuring Haley Reinhart" --- that would be a number one jazz CD and a possible breakthrough for both PMJ and Haley.

'wishful thinking' I think.... I don't think Scott would agree to anything like that ...maybe years down the line. One of PMJ's 'achilles heels' is that he has a rotating cast, not only that but he can have upwards to 3 troupes touring the country/world....what do we commonly hear when you see negative PMJ comments posted? "I came to see X" "We traveled X miles so see X, so disappointed" " I thought I'd finally get to see X after all these years, bummer she wasn't there last night" etc....

In the last year, we have seen Scott bring in a whole bunch of singers who likely will never tour w/ PMJ, or maybe will sing in one show, like Nicole Adkins (sp?) the other night...IMO there's a method to this madness...it's to re-enforce that PMJ is a community of performers, a collective, not one over the others (but I think Haley has been secretly 'more' than the other singers, I think Scott knows her value for promotion of PMJ ) It seems to me that Scott has been highlighting certain singers quite a bit, Sara Niemitz or Addie Hamilton to be their next Superstar, although IMO Haley's set a very high bar.

I think it's also something that some of the singers prefer, the ones that have careers off and running, as opposed to those looking for that first big break. The ones trying to make a name for themselves would love the constant recognition being attached to Scott, they wouldn't have to concern themselves with what songs to sing, the arrangements, forming your own band, touring, social media....that is all something provided by PMJ, all they have to do is show up and sing....

The more seasoned singers, like Haley, Morgan, Melinda D. Sara N etc... it's a nice supplement to their main careers, sing w/ PMJ, bring new PMJ fans to their own music as well as all the perks of being a member of PMJ (free advertising/promotion via Scott) but are more interested in growing their own career... being part of a band, but not exclusively, there is freedom to be who you are, while doing something that's easy that could enhance your career. It's like having a 'friend w/ benefits' without the anchor of being in a full on relationship, so it works out for both Scott and the singers. Scott's value to them is his promotion machinery.

Also, there is the matter of who would be making the money off something like that, I'm sure the singer would get a cut, but ultimately, it's Scott's baby, his arrangements, his tour shows, his promotion, I would imagine most of the money would go to him and PMJ while the 'featured' singer would make much less....even then that singer would probably see it as a complimentary project to their careers, more promotional than something they would produce and out put on their own.

I have heard that the tour is more about Promotion than 'making $$'....Scott runs the show, organizes everything, provides the venues and arrangements. These folks perform with Scott mainly for the exposure, not for the money, as I'm sure Scott and PMJ takes most of the money... remember, he's paying upwards to, what? 12 people or more each tour? Divvy up what's left 12 ways after Scott and PMJ take their cuts, it's probably not much (although, again, I have to imagine, that Haley gets possibly something extra for what she brings to the promotion and exposure for PMJ.... but then again, we know how loyal Haley can be, so maybe she continues w/ them because of that, she has to certainly know that they have helped her career as much as she has theirs)

Finally, there are egos that Scott has to manage among the umpteen performers he has... you have to think that many of PMJ's singers would've loved to perform with them at a venue like Radio City Music Hall, for the prestige of the venue alone, but Scott can't fit them all (I think Haley's value is represented that she, like Morgan and Ariana, got to sing at least 3 songs while others got to sing one... you play a venue of that size and prestige, you bring your "A" game)... You don't go into entertainment without having an ego, Scott has to be able to balance that among all his performers, trying not to hurt anyone's feelings. Showing obvious favor among so many talented, in their own right, performers, could be planting a seed of resentment, which could fester when everyone is traveling, in close quarters, day in day out, while on an extended tour.

Anywho....maybe they will come out w/ a PMJ presents: Haley Reinhart type of album, she's certainly proved she can move units for them, but right now, I think Scott's plan is to be versatile and not be too heavily reliant on any one singer/musician, the only constant is Scott (not necessarily at the show )

I'd be curious as to how much the performers are making. Once upon a time there might not have been a lot of money, but when they tour the U.S. now PMJ rakes in the cash. Venues are 2500-5000 capacity (a few are bigger) and they look pretty full. Tickets seem to be about $39 and up. If the sell 2500 tickets at an average price of $50 for a given show -- that is $125K gross. Lets say they get 70% of that - $87,500. On a slow night or at a smaller venue maybe PMJ''s take is closer to $50-60K, while at Radio City it was probably well over $150K.

I would guesstimate that PMJ could generate around $8 million in gross ticket sales for this tour, with their take as high as $6,000,000. Plus merch. Scott ought to be able to pay a decent wage to the performers.

The Masonic Temple is a beautiful, classy venue. Glad to see it has survived the holocaust of Detroit. I saw my first big time concert there (Dec 1969) - "Crosby, Stills, and Nash" - joined by Young for the second half of the show. Joni Mitchell also came up and sang "Woodstock" with the band.

Man, I completely forgot i posted. Sorry about that xD. I definitely see everyone's points about why she's only performing Seven Nation Army and Creep for a solo. The roster for PMJ is also getting bigger, so I guess it's more difficult for them to give Haley 3 solos like they were. I also see them performing Seven Nation Army because it's doing really well right now, so maybe they want to continue promoting it. The band also might not have had the time to rehearse it, like I think someone mentioned. And Haley has said in many interviews that SNA is her favorite song to perform right now. Plus, I don't think anything can top her performance of it from that All Star concert.
