RE: CREEP - PMJ studio version with HALEY

Its a new day-Haley at No.1 And this should have some staying power-being on the jazz charts its less susceptible to temporary whims like on the pop charts. And virtually everything else on the chart is either classic recordings form various artists -many of whom are no longer with us- or a throwback sound via PMJ.
Haley's version of this -and the sound and the arrangement sounds to me like a classic pop/R+B ballad from about 50 years ago.But whatever label you want to put on it,this is all pretty exciting for Haley fans.
I've already spouted off about how poorly I think iTunes is categorizing music, but, kaypea, you do raise a good point regarding the "durability" of it, if not on the pop charts. You're also right about the pop/R&B ballad approach, although I'd say 60 years ago (it sounds like classic 50's stuff to me). However, that R&B bass line didn't change much (if at all) between the 50's and the early 60's. You're right- the feel is coming out of the fifties but its got that big boomy sound that reminded me more of early to mid sixties. The recording engineers really know what they're doing-its hard to believe that's only five pieces backing her up.
As far as calling it jazz-Haley does bring some of that feel to it but there's lots more going on than that and to call this jazz-or Annie Lenox doing I Put A Spell on You jazz is quite a stretch. And not to take anything at all away from Scott Bradlee who has definitely made his mark but there's hardly anything on iTunes jazz that is at all in keeping with what would be called contemporary jazz.
But hell-there all just labels and Haley has made quite an impression with this recording.

I've always assumed that PMJ is on the jazz chart because of the way Scott labeled the cuts. Seems to me that the iTunes charts are simply marketing tools. Scott can get top 10 and periodic #1 songs on the jazz chart, which is good for PMJ. Creep, while number one on jazz is #181 on the overall itunes chart.
Well-that would make sense for Scott Bradlee or,say Annie Lennox to be able to decide to go that route. But how do you explain Bobby McFerrin or Bobby Caldwell and others having hits from years ago on there not to mention Ray Charles,Nat King Cole,Louis Armstrong,Nina Simone and Benny Goodman all of whom are deceased?
