The festival enjoyed a 15 percent bump in presale tickets over last year thanks to Abrams, Reinhart and A-list jazz illuminaries headliners guitarist Graham Dechter on Saturday and Charles McPherson Sunday, according to John Newman, director of business operations at Idyllwild Arts.

He booked the acts under the guidance of the event’s musical director, festival founder and Idyllwild Arts jazz program head Marshall Hawkins with assistance from mountain resident Anne Finch.

“We are consciously moving away from smooth jazz. We want it be more to more of straight-ahead jazz festival,” Newman said. “We want to showcase a lot of different styles. Marshall wants to show the ways different music has sprung from jazz, a national treasure.”
