Pink Moons & Paper Planes: Synchs Brought Obscurities to Public Attention, But Did It Last?

"Paper Planes" still flies, but "Pink Moon" has been eclipsed, while "How to Save A Life" remains vital. All three songs owe their place in most readers' consciousness to the music supervisors who championed them. A decade after their redefining synchs, these songs have a widely varying footprint, depending, in part, on how big a radio hit they were at the time of their new ascents.

Movies, TV and advertising have always had the power to jump-start a record, but their power was magnified in the mid-'00s, as radio programmers became less likely to pluck a record from total obscurity, or look for "bringbacks" among those songs that had garnered little initial attention. Radio's "promotional consideration" scandals had the perverse effect of leaving radio more in lockstep with record labels' priorities. Music supervisors used their big megaphone to bring some seemingly eclectic choices to public attention. It's a practice that continues now with the re-emergence of Empire of the Sun's "Walking On A Dream," or Haley Reinhart's TV-sport-driven "Can't Help Falling In Love."

Just goes to show the serendipity and timing of Haley signing w/ Ole shortly after being released by Interscope..... although there were synchs back then, it seems to be a much bigger player nowadays w/ so many avenues of media reach, and Ole, being a forward thinking company, has Haley as one of their clients spearheading this growing revenue stream for song writers and artists

Judging from the comments on various YT videos, videogames introduce many people to older songs. That remains a potential market for Haley.

I usually visit the official version, so I hadn't noticed.

I think it was nearing 6 million the last time I looked. Makes sense though that it would be so high. In YT's algorhythm, success begets success. So that's the version people are most likely to find when they search for it.

Regarding gold record status for CHFIL.... The criteria for a RIAA to certify a song as good is the sale of 500K units. A unit could be one physical record, one download, or 150 on-demand (that is, user initiated) streams.

I think Haley has sold more than 225K units of the song by download. Kworb still reports continuing sales of about 1K per week.

Several weeks ago PJ posted that CHFIL had passed 25 million Spotify streams for CHFIL. Using the conversion formula (150 streams = 1 download) this translates to about 167K downloads.

225+167 = 392 units. Almost 80% of the way there. But wait, there's more! This does not include Youtube streams and these are valid in determining gold record status.

So, I wonder how YT views are tallied. The official version with behind the scenes footage has close to 2 million views, which probably count (13,333 units). But what about the unofficial "Official" version, which has 10 million views, but it is just an unauthorized upload of the song. Does it count? If so, it is another 67K units.

If all this is included the unit count is more than 472K. Toss in some of the other YT uploads of the song, and a few thousand Amazon units and this record is on the cusp of gold. But who knows what they count. I think Ole would want everything that can be counted to be counted.
