Q: Previously, you'd been studying jazz at Harper College. What made you decide to compete on "American Idol"?

A: I'd been sort of planning to do that since middle school. At the end of the year, they gave out awards saying what you'd be most likely to do or to be and mine was actually Most Likely to be on "American Idol." (Laughs.) I'd always been one to perform at every talent show, so it seemed natural.

Also, it's just been the way of the times. There are lots of ways to get discovered, but for my generation, that show has been such a great opportunity. It's pretty amazing, when you consider how I saw it coming and it all panned out.

Q: Is "Better" going to be a departure from the jazzy R&B/soul of "Listen Up"? Or more of the same?

A: I think of it as an extension of the first album. I feel I've grown as an artist in terms of songwriting and I've really put my producing skills into practice. I was really meticulous about every nuance of the production, so I'm really proud of this record.

Q: That's in addition to recordings you've done for Ole specifically for films and commercials?

A: Yeah, we've had lots of stuff over the years now. We currently have two different songs that I've recorded. "Show Me Your Moves" is in a Chase bank commercial and a cover of Elvis' "Can't Help Falling in Love" for Wrigley's Extra Gum. That one has completely taken off and been such a blessing for me. And Adult Contemporary radio has picked it up for about 12 straight weeks now.

Q: How do you feel about this benefit show you'll be doing against sexual violence at Durty Nellie's?

A: Well, first of all, the new album is going to be released the day before that show, so it's going to be a big homecoming on lots of levels. I'm also going to have my parents' band backing me up for that show, which is going to be great. And the cause itself is something I've really wanted to put energy and time into since I was a young girl. Plus, April happens to be Sexual Assault awareness month. I'm just happy to be a part of it.
