Found an old Hollywood Reporter interview with Rodney Jenkins, one of the producers on Idol last season. He's talking about the quick turnaround time the show requires, but his response provides a glimpse into the normal timeline for recording a song.

The Hollywood Reporter: ...can you break down the schedule for us?

Rodney Jerkins: When we did Haley Reinhart’s “You've Really Got a Hold on Me,” the call time was 6:00 a.m. I had to have her in the booth by 7:00 a.m. cutting vocals. You only get a three-hour window with these contestants, so I had Stefano coming at 10... It's not a normal recording shift where you do a song and you get a day to tweak it and the third day you mix it.

By "starbizzol" he likely meant "starbizzle," which means Starbucks. Even on the West Coast, this would be after normal working hours -- suggesting Haley is putting in a long day and stepped out for a jolt of caffeine. She was also in the studio the Sunday after Thanksgiving. It's very likely they are pushing to wrap up recording before everyone takes off for an extended holiday period.

Gotta say, I sampled various songs by these two guys and I didn't dig the music. For the most part, I didn't like the sound at all.

I don't know how it works, who sets Haley up with these various writers and producers? Is there a master producer or some such?

ETA: After listening to some of the music associated with these guys it feels like Haley's in the pop factory. Disney. White bread. The Monkees.

What I've found via Wikipedia:

Artists and repertoire (A&R) is the division of a record label that is responsible for...overseeing the artistic development of recording artists...They are expected to understand the current tastes of the market...

Overseeing the recording process

The A&R division oversees the recording process. This includes helping the artist to find the right record producer, scheduling time in a recording studio and advising the artist on all aspects of making a high-quality recording. They work with the artist to choose the best songs (i.e.repertoire) to record. For artists who do not write their own music, they will assist in finding songs and songwriters. A&R executives maintain contact with their counterparts at music publishing companies to get new songs and material from songwriters and producers.

As the record nears completion, the A&R department works closely with the artist to determine if the record is acceptable to the record company. This may include suggesting that new songs need to be written or that some tracks need re-recording. A key issue is whether the album has a single: a particular track which can be used to market the record on radio. As Tom Petty sang in "Into the great wide open", the industry cliché, "I don't hear a single!", refers to this process.

She mentions Motown, the Jackson Five and "other stuff that's kind of groovy." There's a lot of background noise, but I think she is also asked about going back home for the holidays and she says she will but at the moment she's writing with different writers every day.

It also sounds like she is aware now that the show and the tour are over that the judges, especially Randy and then later on JLO as well, were definitely intentionally trying to influence the views and responses of the AI audience to attempt to turn them against Haley, as she mentions that she hopes that her sticking up for herself didn't turn off any fans. Actually, with respect to at least me, it made her much more endearing. I have a feeling that on her recent trip home for Thanksgiving that Haley and her family probably sat down and reviewed the show together for the first time and that some obvious things were pointed out to her.

Indeed, I remember early in the season Haley's response when Randy sarcastically said her rendition of Fallin did a lot for Alicia Keys but didn't do anything for her. At first Haley put a sarcastic look on her face and looked away into the audience that was like, “whatever, you are full of crap, you moron!” Then when Randy kept tearing her performance down by claiming it was Karaoke, Haley responded with a series of three fake gags that mocked Randy's stupidity. For some reason I remember that response to Randy's stupidity at the time was very amusing to me, especially when Steven Tyler abruptly disagreed with Randy by saying, “if I agreed with you, then we would both be wrong.” Indeed, that was very entertaining right there.

Good observation. She's probably been too busy to this point to do that. And I believe at the Wheeling tree lighting ceremony Himm2 gave her father CDs/DVDs that contained her complete Idol journey (put together by HipHopGamer26).

I guess in the Idol world that was a big faux paux but I too found it amusing. I thought the response was disarming. I think he crushed her in her audition the year prior and was trying to cut her to the quick again and she put him on notice that she wasn't going to take what he had to say as seriously this year.
