BUSBEE: I began playing piano at the age of seven and joined the school band at the age of nine, first on trumpet, then baritone horn and eventually tuba and baritone sax. I attended a small private elementary school that had an incredible band program...In high school, I joined the jazz band and switched to trombone. I got excited about jazz and eventually moved to New Jersey for a year to study it. I returned home to the Bay Area after that first year of college...I began pursuing the studio world, first as an intern at a local studio. Not long after that, I started freelancing as a producer. These days I primarily focus on writing but I still do a lot of producing.

...The studio tends to be quite different than the live environment. I prefer it. There is something very intriguing to me about crafting a track, whether that means hiring the right people to play a live track or programming a track and overdubbing on that.

There are a variety of ways of looking at this progression, but as a former trumpet player, the switch from playing some type of brass instrument to a reed instrument blows my mind! (Completely different embouchure is required -- I do know -- I've tried.)

What is not at all evident, is whether he developed any proficiency with a particular instrument before he "moved on" to the next one (and, yes, I'm sort of a stickler about that). Given the time frame between trumpet to trombone, I would say no. However, there are prodigies out there (I suspect that Casey Abrams is one), so I can't say absolutely that he isn't one of them.

Ultimately, I hope that Haley is not in the hands of a dilettante, but rather is in good hands.

She's worked with different producers. Given his interest in jazz he seems like a good choice for this track.

It appears he tackled the trumpet, horn, tuba and sax in elementary school, so I would doubt his proficiency there. But he seems to be able to play a variety of instruments.

He is primarily a songwriter. On the piano, he helped write a song that landed at #1 on the Billboard Country Music Chart:

Lady Antebellum's Dave Haywood told The Boot the story behind the writing of this song: "This was one of the first songs we wrote after we released our first record. We wrote it with Busbee. When we walked into the room that day, he was jamming on a piano. We had never met this guy before, but it turns out he's a really great piano player. He was just jamming for fun, but it was such a cool little piano riff. We start a lot of our songwriting musically, as opposed to lyrically, so we were like, 'What was that? Why don't we just write to that?' Within three or four minutes, we were already humming melodies to a verse and the chorus.

Sounds like he was proficient on the trombone as well:

The California native, who got his start playing trombone around the New York area...ASCAP's Tim DuBois said he thinks he has something strangely in common with Busbee...

"As far as I know -- and I haven't checked this out very carefully -- but Busbee and I, I think, are the only two trombone players who have gone on to have a No. 1 country record," DuBois said. He added, "Like me, he learned it is hard to write on trombone."

BICO is #82 at this time on iTunes. Mistletoe jumped to 48 -- I think because JB was on the Today show. I'm hoping that Haley and Casey get some national television exposure and I think they will. Interscope has to be working that. The Ellen show would be a obvious fit. With a couple of TV appearances, as well as radio play, it would interesting to see the impact on sales.

In the short term, aside from promotion, it hardly seems worth the effort in terms of sales given the short holiday window. But I imagine a holiday tune is a long-term play that pays dividends down the road on an annual basis. Imagine what the sales might be next year if Haley's debut album is a hit.
