No doubt. It's quite a mix of styles. He could be an interesting influence for Haley and apparently she likes what he does. It sounds like she wants to work with him going forward.

I think this is one of the best interviews Haley's given yet. One of the things that pleases/impresses me is that she remains consistent in her messages of her Idol experience: the judges' criticisms made her tougher (and also made her have to bring her A+ game into every performance, although she tends not to talk about that); that she has never publicly stated any regrets about the "almost recorded/released single" at the end of the show not being released. If anything, she's more convinced now that "it's the best thing" that it went nowhere.

She's getting more polished as her own best spokesperson. I'm assuming some of that will show in her music as well.

I'm impressed that Haley is a quick study. She came to Idol with a solid base and has continued to grow at every step of the game. I look for that in some of the other idols and don't see it. (Haley is in a different league growthwise. Scotty is developing quickly, but musically he's got a simpler task.) If anybody thinks they've got her number, she is likely to leave them in the dust.

He appears to be a nice guy from Chicago who eats and sleeps music. He also likes to mix it up musically like Haley. Sounds like a match made in heaven.

Rob won Best Original Score at Visionfest 2010 for his work on the film "Stuck!" It was apparently the first film he had scored.

Listening to these snippets, I realized one of the things Rob might bring to the table is sound design -- the ability to set a mood and help tell the story of a song.

I'm impressed that Haley is a quick study. She came to Idol with a solid base and has continued to grow at every step of the game. I look for that in some of the other idols and don't see it. (Haley is in a different league growthwise. Scotty is developing quickly, but musically he's got a simpler task.) If anybody thinks they've got her number, she is likely to leave them in the dust.

Indeed she is a quick study -- another really good sign in a musician. And while I also agree with you that she's in a different league, I'm not so sure that it's growthwise. Scotty is developing quickly. He's a smart kid and he seems to be gobbling up his opportunities to learn the business of music. However, it depends on what you mean/how you're thinking, that "musically", Scotty's task is less challenging.

Assuming that you mean as long as Scotty stays within the country genre, he's fine, I suspect you are correct -- although, since Haley has been absorbing all that she does since birth (if not before), I suspect that Haley and Scotty are on the same par.

However, if for some reason, Scotty wanted or needed to venture beyond the country zone, his learning curve would be significantly greater than Haley's would be -- unless she suddenly developed a love of opera and decided to pursue that as a career. (Not that I don't think she could do it, but that takes years of development! And, well, there is her signature raspiness that probably wouldn't mesh too well )

She has had exposure to a large variety of music and pursued experience in different genres in recent years. A big task has been to tame it all and create a lane to cruise for this album. After grappling with a way to describe it she now referred to her musical style simply as "my own." Opera would be a major shift, but she could do a jazz, rock, R&B, or country album right now. Or some creative hybrid. In coming years I think she will not be so predictable and I think she will hop into different lanes at times.

I wear Haley colored glasses so I think she is in a league of her own in all ways. That might be the long and the short of it. But if someone thinks they have found a musical box for her, either with respect to style or her level of skills, it is likely that the next time they look in the box she will be gone.

I'm also expecting a lot out of Casey and it will be interesting to see where he goes in his post-idol career. I expect Casey to develop production skills that could prove interesting.

This morning, I was thinking about how professional Haley sounded in this Yahoo! Music interview. And I realized in large part that was because she was so comfortable with the topic. She is proud of what she has created. And thankful she was given that opportunity.

That's a good sign. I can't imagine how uncomfortable she would have been if forced to promote an album she didn't like.

Not to rehash old stuff, but I think we can now see why Randy and JLo had such a tough time trying to nudge Haley down a particular lane... It hadn't been created yet. Perhaps they will encourage some of this year's participants to venture down her lane.

I honestly believe Haley will have that type of a lasting impact on American Idol. I've already heard some of this season's contestants like Shannon Magrane bring compared to her. In fact, I was disappointed that Shannon's group performance showed only a snippet of her. I did catch the complete performance on the Idol website though and she sounded pretty good. By the way, the Magrane's live minutes away from me.
