Haley going in circles is a visual metaphor. As is the guy outside:

1) Flowers = Courtship
2) Suitcase = Breakup
3) Bicycle = Repeating steps 1 & 2

After watching the video several times, I’ve come to the realization that the song has a theme we haven’t considered before. Now, this is only a thought, but it seems to fit, so after you read this go back and watch “Free” again with an open mind.

Remember the movie “Ghost”, well I think “Free” could very well be our “Ghost”. Consider that the breakup may have been because Haley’s character died suddenly. Her man has met someone but is agonizing over her, and she is pleading with him to let her go and move on. She on the other hand is actually in a happier place, but she is also unable to move on (into the light so to speak) because she isn’t ready to let go of him either.
