"Free" Official Music Video

I'm very excited about the Vevo video. Not only are the numbers strong, but based on the comments, the demographics look real good. International and young. And for many this is their introduction to Haley.

I think that the worldwide greening for Free is a huge tell. Haley is going to make a big splash.

I visited the Katy Perry video and several Haley videos were suggested but not the Vevo one, although the fake mTV "Official" Free video is listed.

The number of plays appeared to drop off quickly in the afternoon today. Comments indicated that earlier there were lots of viewers being introduced to Haley, but the drivers for that activity seemed to have dried up rather suddenly.

I actually looked at the stats for Scotty and James' videos for their first releases yesterday. I was going to make a post but it was so late I ended up going to bed.

The one thing that jumped out at me for Scotty's "Trouble with Girls" was the fact he doesn't have trouble with girls:

Those numbers really put into perspective how low James' numbers are (230K). His appeal is also mainly to women in the U.S., but skews older:

Haley is popular in more spots globally. Many I can't identify without a map that has their name on it.

According to YouTube, "Free" is appealing to the same gender/age groups as Pia:

But Haley is tearing it up in South America and Oceana (Indonesia, Malaysia ,Brunei, the Philippines, etc) whereas Pia held little appeal. Some like it hot.

Well, it looks like the number of Free plays today fell short of my prediction of 300K. The number is closer to 260,000. The play rate in the last eight hours dropped off considerably. It makes me wonder if a promotional placement had ended or something else made Haley's video less visible.

The change is apparent in the nature of the comments as well as play counts. Earlier the comments were coming in fast and they were overwhelmingly positive and fresh. Now the comments have largely degenerated into troll vs Halien squabbling. Yuck. That little honeymoon was special though.

The positive reactions of Haley noobs, along with her worldwide appeal and the strong interest of teenagers in Free bodes well for our girl. That said, I think that big gains in popularity will require drivers such as appearances on late night television in addition to radio play. She also has a nice stash of additional songs, which is where her eventual smash hit probably resides at the moment.

I think the number views are dropping because she is no longer on the backdrop on vevo.com. I think that was a great promotional push. I know a lot of people who open that page everyday. That alone was bring tons of new people from other countries and the States. A lot of comments were coming from new people, which was exciting. That backdrop with link was only there for a day and I notice after it was gone that views and comments were decreasing. The views were already there, but YT was just trying to keep up.

Whatever they spent to put her on that page (I think) was well worth the exposer. Maybe they should put her up there again when the album comes out??? Like the statement above, I think from now on unless she's going on national TV or with some strong promotional support we will just see a steady increase of 2-3k a day coming from hard core fans. If only the world could see what they are missing out on...

• A measure of fame from her time on Idol. She was really the story line last season: Haley Reinhart vs the country kids.
  

• Major label backing. They've hooked her up with talented people and spent money on promos.
  

• A distinctive voice. And an ability to use it in a variety of ways.
  

• A quality album. The new songs we've heard have been met with nearly universal approval.
  

The question is, when does she catch fire? Having never followed the career of a performer before, I have no idea where the tipping point might be. Despite its diminished significance, it does seem that radio play is still key. Radio play leads to TV, both of which boost Internet buzz and sales.

Thanks for posting. I saw that the Vevo feature was down (although Katy Perry, J-Lo, etc were still there). I think the exposure showed that Haley has broad appeal. I have no need (or desire) to see her rocket to stardom, but it will be nice to see new people coming on board the Haley train.

Miguel, I think I would use critical mass instead of tipping point. When she reaches that moment, her fan base will explode exponentially beyond belief.

That's essentially what I meant. I was thinking of Malcolm Gladwell's book, The Tipping Point:

The word "Tipping Point" comes from the world of epidemiology. It's the name given to that moment in an epidemic when a virus reaches critical mass. It's the boiling point. It's the moment on the graph when the line starts to shoot straight upwards. AIDS tipped in 1982, when it went from a rare disease affecting a few gay men to a worldwide epidemic.

...When I heard that phrase for the first time I remember thinking--wow. What if everything has a Tipping Point? Wouldn't it be cool to try and look for Tipping Points in business, or in social policy, or in advertising or in any number of other nonmedical areas?

...ideas and behavior and messages and products sometimes behave just like outbreaks of infectious disease. They are social epidemics.
