let's assume for the purposes of the discussion that haley reinhart has at least a modicum of musical talent, and is a nice person.

the success of american idol commercially, brings advertising dollars and ratings to the fox network. and the fox network, it's underboss, roger ailes, and it's proprietor, rupert murdoch, are just right-wing nazi douchebag fucks, whose efforts against freedom and liberty in the u.s. and elsewhere are fucking utterly reprehensible.

so, wheeling's own haley isn't helping the progressive cause, because her success came due to the war mongering shit media that is fox. as jello biafra and dave marsh might say, corporate rock still sucks.

Lollapalooza is a for-profit entity, no matter who applies for its permits. Parkways creates a loophole, and not even a good one: Chicago law is clear that an exemption should be granted to a nonprofit event only if all of its proceeds go to the nonprofit.

...It works like this: Parkways Foundation, a nonprofit group dedicated to improving Chicago's parks, applies for Lolla's permits. Because nonprofits don't pay the amusement tax, Parkways, and by extension Lollapalooza, are exempt. The festival gives Parkways up to 10.25 percent of its gross profits, along with all-access passes and complimentary tickets for Parkways' board members.

...We know you'll be shocked to hear the contract was awarded without bidding. It prohibits any similar festival from playing in Grant Park.

...For seven years and counting, Lollapalooza has been exempted from the Chicago amusement tax, a 5 percent fee the city collects on tickets for sporting events, movies, etc. The festival also pays nothing to occupy Grant Park for three days every year.

All told, the city and the Chicago Park District would collect an estimated $3 million per year were it not for the festival's generous contract.

...Yes, Lollapalooza gives Chicago an economic boost, bringing in tourism dollars and maintaining our image as a good music town. But it also has economic downsides: Lollapalooza prohibits all its acts from performing within 300 miles of the city for six months before the fest and three months after. That blocks locally owned music venues from booking those acts instead of the giant Lollapalooza, which has been dubbed "Wal-Mart by the Lake."
