Side note: I was just looking up information on Jan Baalsrud -- a commando in the Norwegian resistance trained by the British during World War II -- because I'm considering reading a book about him. A bit of background: while hiding from the Germans, he amputated nine of his toes with a pocketknife to stop the spread of gangrene.
