I don’t know much about ZZ Ward but I have to think she is a little older and was touring with her band for a some time before she was signed. And, once signed, it was just a matter of getting that band and her on the road to promote it. And from her label: no big expectations of huge sales to start but with a commitment by them to support her, get her exposure through TV appearances, etc, release singles, release videos and build her up for the long term.

With Haley, she was a young solo performer when signed with no established band, and no real experience on a tour. She had not spent the long months traveling, playing bars and clubs, etc to gain that kind of touring experience. (And, please note, I do not count the Idol tour as she was just a part of that show, and was not the headliner.) And as noted, since Interscope is really only about huge acts and not developing new artists, they just did not feel the need to support her with the commitment and cost of a larger band since “Listen Up” did not blow up maybe as they had hoped.

As I have said here before, let’s hope that a new label WILL make that commitment and find a great backing band to support her second CD with a tour this summer. And, Hollywood Records would be a great place to land, and ZZ Ward and Haley live would make for a fantastic show.

I believe ZZ is 24. Her father was in a blues band in Oregon and she first performed onstage with them when she was 12. Her brothers introduced her to hip hop. She combined the two influences. After playing county fairs and local talent shows for a few years, she moved to Los Angeles "where three months later manager Evan Bogart discovered her on Myspace." Alone in her apartment, she wrote many of the songs on her album. She also put out a mix-tape that put her spin on some hip-hop songs and it was apparently lauded by some notable hip hop artists. Though she had already written the songs for it, her album wasn't released until later. She toured before that and even played SXSW. This past fall, when her album was released, she "headlined a 45-date tour, selling out in Los Angeles; New York City; Denver; Austin, Texas; and San Francisco."

I thought she went to school with Chiara at USC, but apparently not. But they became friends at some point.



I wonder if Haley has met ZZ through Chiara and possibly been influenced by her.

Miguel you are a good researcher. Let me add a little bit to that. She moved from Oregon to LA in 2009 (so she would've been 20 or 21. Her B-Day is June 2nd) & signed w/ Even Bogart at Boardwalk Mgmt shortly after. She didn't get signed by Hollywood Records until 2011. I'm not sure when she met Chiara but I think it was before she signed w/ Hollywood. About a year ago Chiara tweeted that'd she'd seen ZZ & Allen Stone perform about 50 times each, (probably mostly in clubs around LA).

She release a mixtape called "Eleven Roses" on Feb 1st 2012. I read an interview and she said that was a side project she did while in the studio.

Then her EP "Criminal" came out on May 8th 2012. Her song "Til the Casket Drops" also got the promo spot for "Pretty Little Liars" (on ABC family - see good TV promo) around that same time.

Then her album "Til the Casket Drops" was released on Oct. 16th. That 45 date tour took place all last fall both before & after the album dropped and a lot of those venues were bars. She played a few shows w/ Gary Clark Jr. in NY & LA & those were at bigger venues. Now that she's getting some airplay & has been on TV a few times this tour w/ Delta Rae (who've also gotten some TV exposure & radio play) is mostly at smaller concert halls. She was touring all last year tough. There's even a video of her singing "Home" from a show she played in Paris.

Anyway, I have tweeted Chiara asking if Haley had met ZZ but didn't get a response. Last fall I tweeted Chiara "If Haley was the Beatles, ZZ would be The Stones" & she retweeted saying "I'm OK w/ this".

I really like the Beatles / Stones comparison when it comes to how ZZ's & Haley's own sounds might compare to one another. ZZ has more of a Delta blues (back porch blues/jump blues) sound mixed w/ urban hip/hop beats (& tbh some rock) She calls her sound DirtyShine. I think Haley's sound will be more of a Chicago blues sound (which is a more uptown sophisticated, jazz influenced style) mixed w/ her classic rock influences. And I think if they did go on tour together at some point they could use this "Two sides of the blues" contrast to good effect much like the Beatles & Stones did. Kind of a Let it Be/Let it Bleed type of thing.

... Oh I forgot to mention ZZ is going to be on "Good Morning America" tomorrow at 8am playing "Put the Gun Down" & then on VH1's Morning Buzz playing "365 Days" at 10am.

Thanks Miguel for all that background. I too really like ZZ Ward and her sound and her debut album is terrific. Clearly, she does have much more experience with touring as a headliner with an established band.

Let's hope that Haley can be inspired by her to follow in those footsteps and get on the road with a solid band to support her second CD.

I think we can all agree, Haley can have a long and very successful career, but she needs to collaborate with and lead a solid band and tour and tour and tour to gain that experience in performing longer sets. She starts off with her tens of thousands of Haliens and will add thousands more through touring by knocking people dead with her amazing talent. I am sure she will get there.

Haley's instincts were correct. "Oh My!" should have been the first single. I think they probably shied away from that decison because B.o.B couldn't support it and they possibly thought it would alienate her Idol base.
