Speaking of 2013 perspective, I have been working onsite near American Airlines arena in Dallas. Today, I had lunch in a small bar right across from the arena. It was a late lunch, so I was the only customer. The barkeep and busboy/cook were playing some hip-hop type music.

I spied a TouchTunes music box on the wall. At some point, the music broke for a DJ to say something. I put my dollar in the TouchTunes box and played the only Haley Reinhart song available, "Free." The place had a great sound system and it was really enjoyable to hear the song played loudly and clearly over it.

After it was over, there was silence for a time. Then the busboy went up to a touchpad and punched something in. A driving rap music started to play. An hour and a half later my head is still physcially agitated by it.

Yes Miguel Rap music will leave you mentally disabled but you did get to( Free) your your mind for a bit.

What made the experience even more annoying is I paid more for a burger, fries and drink than I had spent in two weeks of taking my lunch.

The Irony is, in 10 or 20 years, the busboy will be reminiscing about how 'great' music was 'in the day'.

Every generation goes through that evolution of perspective.
(Think Elvis and his (horrors) hip shaking, the Doors 'couldn't get much higher' and the Sex Pistols and the Punk movement etc... )

I'd like to think that music would come back full circle to more instrumentation and to inspired musicality and less of the 'digital'/beat driven, creatively templated cacophony that reigns on the air waves of today's pop music, but I know that's unlikely

I believe that is an accurate description.

There has been a debate in country music circles for some time over "old country" versus "new country." Her song is clearly the latter.

"New Country" might not exist though if pop music hadn't embraced "'digital'/beat driven, creatively templated cacophony."

Because many of today's country songs sound like old pop music.

Nice observation.
I never thought of that, Dance/Electro/R&B and HipHop pushing former rock fans into "New Country" fans...

The Eagles were early pioneers of that "New Country" sound, a mix of The catchy lyrics and 'earworm' quality of popular, the guitar focus and soul of blues and rock/ and the subject matter and twang of country.

It's a natural transition

Actually the vast majority of modern rock music is instrument driven. Pop music started moving in the EDM direction way back, starting w/ disco, which was probably a big part of why there was such a backlash against it back then. Electronic vs. instrument oriented might actually be the single biggest factor separating the pop & rock genres.

I love a lot of classic rock bands. That's the core of the music I like the most. But I've always been able to find current bands that appealed to my tastes as well. There's good instrument driven music, alot of which would appeal to fans of different types of classic rock, out right now... there's a ton of acoustic folk rock, and there's quite a bit of bluesy soulful stuff, and there are really pretty emotional songs like "People Help the People" by Birdy or "Youth" by Daughter.

But if classic rock fans will only listen to classic rock or decide modern country is the closest thing to the music they like, then we will really end up w/ just EDM Pop, Hip Hop, & Modern Country.... Get out yer cowboy boots Hales. Nah she probably wouldn't do that. She'd go EDM pop before country. I'm excited.

My point is if you like classic rock, there's still good rock music being played on the radio. You might not just fall in love w/ a lot of it, but you'll find something that you like.

I can't imagine a fan of the blues or bluesy classic rock that wouldn't love this song, but most of them probably haven't heard it.

I've noticed a recent trend in female rockers. (Or Pop Rock)

Florence and the Machine, Delta Rae (although, they have a bit of a unique sound beyond rock) and Grace Potter.

Not only that, but Pink and Kelly are almost always on the pop rock side of things.

EDM certainly isn't the only thing out there, even for pop music.
