Candice Glover: “Somewhere” (from West Side Story)
Quote:But then, as she opened her mouth and began to sing a sublime, achingly patient rendition of the West Side Story chestnut that dialed back on runs and ad-libs — and relied more on the stunning ebb and flow of her instrument, as well as her ability to get inside a song and completely inhabit its lyrics — I realized something: Candice is simply too remarkable to go chasing whatever ridiculous formula has made Ke$ha a star while Haley Reinhart gets dropped by her label.

Ok .. I'll spare the editorial and while I think Candice sings it beautifully, to me she misses the lyrical nature of it...
... there is a lot of theme, variation , theme variation
ying yang, .. and somehow maybe some musical ironies are lost and words like "a" (there's "a" place) seem to glow and words like "forgiving" seem to be afterthoughts to the sentences ... and even with the scrambled eggs version "fly-fishing" say instead of "forgiving" needs to be said as if it were an answer/completion.. not necessarily a glory note, but an whispered "I do" at a wedding...said definitively. OOPs I'm editorializing.
At it's heart, West Side story is scored something like a ballet -- and while this particular song isn't typically a major dance number, the rise and fall of the whole script,, almost entirely sung ... flows lyrically ... its in 4-4 but sort of loops a bit like a waltz(maybe a slow foxtrot).
To be fair, Candice sings it more like Barbara Streisand who took a bit of that lyrical (like a harp.. lyre ) out ... but Barbara still had more allegiance to the score refferentially... the rise and fall in a flowing operatic force still underly babs (not shown).
Here are a couple I feel move me... and don't grate on me from being untrue to the flow of such a great score.
and below, from the movie...
(I find it illustrative of other preferences of mine... i'd prefer a far less strong voice any day of the week.. even perhaps with flaws in pitch, if things like feelings of
trepidation, and
wonder, and
pain and
hope all flow in whiffs of tone from the phrases....
We've heard many idol performers be able to move through mutiple nuanced feeligns . Hudson, and even Jordin Sparks in a few.. not to mention Haley.
I said.. sometimes familiarity with the music (I think I sat in with our school orchestra for a couple numbers when our high school staged the musical) I'm also so familiar with the full operatic interpretation of Gershwin's "Summertime" I can't really stomach the "cliff notes" version.. even if sung by Ella Fitzgerald --- and Baratimo was of course worst than that.. leaving me lurching for the stop button and looking for the real operatic verstion with the correct undertones etc.
Just exploring my preferences..
People have had interesting things of their own to share which helped me look into other fun things so .. thats my hope.. not to change any one else's enjoyment.
