lol.. I guess I had some pent up emotion forming from snipes people were taking other places !
Y'all know I'm sick of the degree of emphasis on backstories/sobstories.... guess that sort of came out.
I'm just really happy there is a least some move towards cutting all this emotional crap and treating the thing like drama coaches would casting a high school play or how Coaches would address a varsity football team.
Tom22, I agree about the back (sob) stories; they have grown largely tiresome and, in some cases, taken front & center stage to the detriment/exclusion of the talent.
Also, I agree with Nicki's approach on calling out some of the stuff that's going on. (Although, like Melinda, I can empathize with Paul Jolley's nerves. When I was in band from the start through high school, I was excruciatingly shy, let me repeat " excruciatingly shy" and the only way that I got through performances was because I could "hide" behind a music stand. I could do some really terrific stuff while I "hid" behind it. But had someone pulled my crutch away, I don't know what might have happened.)
What bothered me about Nicki's reaction to Papa Peaches when he performed "You and I" was that what she said and how she reacted, at the beginning -- before the guy had even started singing -- was disingenuous to me. No, it wasn't a good song choice for him and his performance was most certainly uninspired. And, personally, I thought he was dreadful from the outset.
But she was dismissive of him -- and let's remember, she's the only reason he had gotten this far to begin with -- before he'd opened his mouth. Where did that come from? Had the other judges managed to reason with her? Had "Uncle Nigel" had one of his "chats"?
That's why the question mark about Nicki has, again, entered my consciousness.

I tend to think her reaction to the song had more to do with 'off camera' things than her dislike of the song, per se.
I felt a disconnect between what we saw on TV and Nicki's reactions. Also, the way he took the criticism, as if he knew what she was referring to. He looked resigned.
I can't believe she didn't like the song right away because of some kind of thing between her and GaGa, there were other GaGa songs performed, "Edge of Glory", and she didn't react similarly. So definitely not a reaction to someone singing a 'GaGa' song.
A possibility is that she might have advised him on something, and he ignored her and went a different route. She talked about how she warned him the previous day about stepping up his game.... Also, as he left, he said AI wasn't for him and he didn't like singing other people's songs... so maybe that had something to do with the story between them..
Maybe he told her that he wanted to sing "You and I" and performed it for her and she nixed it. So he shows up on stage and does the exact song she advised against...
The whole sequence seemed like part of the story was missing that we didn't see. I don't think it had to do with the song at all, but something to do with her relationship with him as a mentor/adviser/supporter.
(Telling him that his flame is out (a strong and finite criticism) spoke to something personal that offended Nicki)

I feel exactly the same for Season 10. I never cared about any other seasons the way I cared about each one of them.  I just feel like they are the PERFECT season. Maybe that's the reason, I was never that hooked with S11 and don't have that much interest for S12.
