RE: Haley and Casey - CityWalkLA - August 10th
Yanni, thanks for providing this version of the Flintstones theme. So twice today, I've heard this song ala jazz hot, baby. It's terrific this way! (Although, there's a long term memory element that's whispering that maybe I've heard a recording of this done by some jazz group in the past.) It's interesting, because there are at least two, if not three generations, for whom this theme would have instant recognition, and, therefore, it's such a smart, humorous jazz choice!
This is the first time I've seen Haley seem not in full command. I get the feeling she and Casey didn't do any rehearsal on this. Rather, Casey, being that spontaneous guy we know him to be, assumed that Haley could just whip out "trading fours/twos" whatever, with him, and, perhaps, harmonizing along with his scatting, when, in fact, she wasn't quite sure what was he was going to be doing (because, like duh, when is Casey ever predictable?).
The scat solo she did do was wonderful, and I love some of the minor notes she hit in her lower register!
The pace of this is breakneck! I don't think that I ever noticed that of the original theme, although Casey and Jacob may have the "metronome" set slightly higher than the original.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable piece, and Casey better get this recorded in ways other than Youtube soon!

It's been said before that Haley's voice is like an instrument. But that's the first time I've heard it compared to a guitar. Interesting. If you hadn't put together the video, I don't think I would have understood what you were talking about. Thanks for taking the time to do that.
Given her daddy's vocation, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that Haley might be able to able to mimic a guitar.
That said, as a former instrumentalist, what I realized rather quickly, once I started singing in a university choir, is that that human voice is its own instrument, with far more fullness, depth, richness and color than any single blown/bowed/pressed/struck instrument on its own. And Haley's voice consistently expresses fullness, depth, richness and color.

I couldn't agree more MAE, I was thinking last night that it took Haley by surprise, like she was hearing that version for the first time. I pictured Casey asking her pre-show, "Hey, come out and scat the theme from the Flintstones with me." She seemed to enjoy it as much as I did. That was certainly fast-paced, Casey was really giving it his all.

(See bolded sentence) That well could be -- it does sound like that "spontaneous Casey" we've come to expect from him. In some ways, it may have been a bit unfair of Casey to spring this on her like that, if what you pictured is accurate. And, yes, she did seem to enjoy it, and, as I said before, when she did her own scat solo, it was fantastic, and all (not some as I said before) minor notes she hit were fabulous. But I do think he was expecting her to chime in earlier, when she was just trying to get a grip on "what the heck is going on here."
I'd love to know the story behind why Casey (and Jacob) started playing this. Once I'd posted my above statement, it hit me that the chordal structure of the Flintstones theme lends itself to jazz, and I wonder if the composers had that in mind when writing it?

I just listened to the original theme. Yes, it is that fast.

What is not obvious in the original theme, and what Casey and Jacob make sure we recognize is all the sub and sub-sub beats in the tune. Once again, holy moly!

Thanks, MakesFigure8. ( I love figure skating too - -or, at least, watching it!) In reality, I could barely stand up on skates, but in my dreams I was Michelle Kwan, long before Michelle Kwan was born.
