RE: American Idol 2014
Quote:What I remember is that I liked her tone and the character in her voice and I saw what I thought was potential. The total package looked promising as well.
First impressions are a lot of the time not gonna be very conclusive and I guess everyone can take away different things from them.
Edit-I wasn't sure which Jessica you were referring to but-speaking of first impressions at an audtion there was another girl-Jessica Bassett who didn't make it past her audition -who I also thought looked impressive. She got invited on to The Ellen Show which may be a first for a failed audition because Ellen thought she got robbed as well. She's also mentioned on this week's Idology.
First impressions -- indeed! A couple of years ago there was a young woman who performed Come Together (I think that was it). She had worked out choreography, was filling in the instrumental parts during the breaks when there is "no singing." She exuded confidence, she was so stylish, she had all the judges eating out of her hand. I figured she was one to watch. However, once she got to Hollywood, while I saw her face in some large group photos, I never heard her sing again. Mind you, I don't watch the show. (I get up far too early to be able to stay up to watch, even if I could pull the channel in) I tune into a live blog during the Eastern time viewing, read Mr. Slezak's recap the next morning and then go Youtube searching, so there might have been other clips. But I don't think she lasted long in Hollywood.
From that experience, I came to realize that there are some auditioners who probably aren't all that talented but put in a great deal of effort to "perfect" an audition act -- Lazaro comes to mind. Once they're put into the combine of Hollywood Week, their limitations are quickly revealed. Lazaro again comes to mind, although he kept progressing -- and, well, unfortunately, we remember all too well what a hot mess that was.
All of that is just to say, beware first impressions. From Himm's earlier posts, it sounds as though Melanie's problem was song choice. And with HCJ leading the judges (because he has assumed leadership of that group), we may hear about "appropriate" song choice frequently.
I had been speaking of Jessica (or Jess) Meuse. As I said before, I don't watch the show itself (and I'm doubtful that I could DVR it, since I sincerely doubt that I can pull in the channel) but after reading Michael Slezak's recap, I searched for an uploaded clip of Jessica Bassett, but came up empty. Obviously, I've missed someone I shouldn't have missed.
Majesty Rose (my, what a name!) is stunning me. She is just such a breath of fresh air. And EmKay Nobilette! I think because of the androgenous/transgender appearance, she will struggle, which is too bad, because she's really talented. A commentor on Slezak's recap found this clip, which has me hooked:

Here is Jessica. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk0KuBQUPrs
I thought she was pretty good, but not amazing.
Ellen also got her song put on itunes, and advertised it on her show. Hopefully some good things come out of this for her.

RE: American Idol 2014
Mercfan, thanks for the Jessica Bassett clip. The song she wrote is extraordinarily repetitious, but she's young and the intent of the song was support. it was sweet of Jessica to "pen a tune" for her friend. As a songwriter/musician/singer she could benefit from more experience. Fortunately she's young, so time and experience are on her side.
kaypea, I agree that, as a judge, Harry brings much to the table in comparison to what we've been accustomed to for the past few years. During auditions he had a couple of lapses (Nikki McKibben's son and the daughter of the Sugarhill Gang member), but those were more political expediencies, rather than anything else. I foresee his musical knowledge, integrity, and great wit showing up more as we move into the live shows. I hope that, as Harry continues in that fashion, Keith will become more comfortable with following suit. In any of the categories that I mentioned (music knowledge, integrity and wit), J-Lo stands no chance.
As with you, Mercfan, and probably everyone else on this board, I certainly do not miss Randy as a judge. But I keep remembering that he's not gone -- just in a new role. And in that new role, while he won't be able to do what he did to Haley, he can certainly mess with the contestants, particularly the younger ones, so that they may not know which end is up. Until Randy can prove me wrong (something I feel is unlikely), I truly feel sorry for this year's contestants.

Ah, but J-Lo brings a knowledge of the essence of celebrity and pathways to success independent of those things you mention. I suppose there is a role for that.
True. She or those she has employed have been very successful in her name and visage in the limelight .... and, perhaps, you're correct, there is something to be said for that. But what??

RE: American Idol 2014
JLo is a good entertainer. As slezak said, she understands how to put on a good show (choreography, staging, lighting..energy.) And you would think that this is something she could talk about, and help people with. Which could be a reason why she liked James so much.
Not only that, but you don't have to be the best singer in the world to understand singing. And you'd think she'd understand things like pitch, vocal control..etc.
The thing is, JLO lets her personal taste get in the way too often. I appreciated that she stuck up for DeAndre Brackensick. He is an incredibly talented vocalist. He just wasn't ready for something like Idol, and his style isn't something that works on Idol. But JLO saw his talent partially because she liked the style. The thing is, she's much harder on the girls than the guys. For her to say that Jessica Sanchez does the same thing every week while Phillip Phillps was standing right next to Jessica...

RE: American Idol 2014
Looks like Melanie's grandmother has taken to posting at TVLine
She's wondering what happened to her grand daughter on the show,
Quote:My granddaughter, Melanie, seemed to have been erased from the competition when she exited with her Golden Ticket at the Detroit auditions. Except for a blurry millisecond glimpse of her on the bus as they arrived at the hangar, there is no other evidence she even walked through the hangar door., No sign of her in still photos, crowd scans, contestant interactions, etc., She was eliminated on the first hangar night, but, you would never have known it by watching the show. There has not even been so much as a mention of her on the show since Detroit, although she has gotten a lot of very nice reviews from media all over the country, and great feedback from people who have contacted her. Her friends, family and fans are all scratching their heads over it. How does a popular contestant disappear completely from American Idol without anyone making a single comment about it?
Melanie herself was surprised to not be shown as well,

@tami042472 They just showed a clip of me in the group going home. I don't know what to say, i was really confused, lol

@StacieSzymanski @AmericanIdol i'm not exactly sure why they didn't show me , but they did show me getting cut. :/

@mills_alec i dont know whats going on, i dont understand why they didn't show a larger clip of me getting cut. But I am so thankful
She seems to have a good attitude about it though, so she will be fine
