Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse “A New Orleans Creole Christmas,“ Basin Street, $16.99

A trombone growls its way into a bluesy “Silent Night.” A second-line beat carries “O Tannenbaum” through bantering trad-jazz horns. “Winter Wonderland” (a Mardi Gras mambo) and “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” (a gospel-chorded hymn) are piano-trumpet duets. “The Christmas Song” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” are chromatic late-night ballads. It’s exactly what might be expected of the historically aware New Orleans trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and his group. But they relax into each track, starting out working the concept and ending up playful.

I listened to KPLU's online Jazz 24 the first week of December to see if I might hear some of this album on it. They weren't playing any Christmas music yet that week -- and I don't know whether they ever do, but I try it again this week.

Just picked up my copy of the CD (“A New Orleans Creole Christmas") tonight…can't wait to listen to it! Listened to snippets on iTunes and really liked what I heard.
