Not sure what the girl who posted the picture does. After reviewing her photos, I think her name is Caroline and she is Swedish. She has traveled the world in the last six months: London, Thailand, a beach in Spain, Dubai, Stockholm and more.

UNDERSTANDING SONGWRITING SPLITS

There are many misconceptions about co-writing splits and publishing splits for songwriters. In regard to any contract you might be presented, you ALWAYS need to consult an entertainment or intellectual property lawyer to make sure you are signing a good contract. But, I wanted to try to simplify some of the details and help everyone make sense of song splits.

Here are some of the highlights from my writing experience:

1) In my world, everyone in the room receives an equal share of the song, no matter who contributed most. To me, that’s the most fair way to do it. Trying to determine who contributed what and splitting things unequally can get ugly fast.

2) Each writer in the room controls TWO shares of the song. Each has a writer share and a publisher share. So, if I write a song with you, there are 4 equal shares of our song. Your publishing and writer shares and mine.

3) The publishing share is the controlling interest of the song. It includes administration rights. And it can be bought and sold. The writers share is generally considered to be inalienably yours as the creator of the work. Signing away all of your publishing share includes signing away all of the controlling interest and administration rights for the song. That means that the new owner of the publishing can make decisions regarding the song or place the song without your consent. They can also sell that share to someone else.

4) Each writer is free to sign away or keep their publishing share without consent of the other writer(s). If I decided to sign my publishing share to a publisher, my co-writers don’t have to sign the deal or agree to it. They are free to sign their publishing to a different publisher or to keep it for themselves.

5) Signing publishing shares to different publishers gives you more people working the song. Clay and I have different publishers. When we write a great song, we each have teams of people trying to get those songs recorded. Putting all of your eggs in one basket by having each writer sign their publishing to one publisher only gives you one team working the song. That’s not usually best.

6) To get a staff writing deal or a single song contract, you will have to barter away part or all of your publishing share. Holding on to your publishing as long as you can is usually a good move, but you will eventually have to part with some or all of it if you hope to “get in the game”
