RE: Haley's Vocal Range
The first song is Sweet Something by Haley Reinhart. Identified by Fig8 as shown here: http://haleyfans.com/showthread.php?tid=1016
Quote:I still have this sweet sweet sugar on my teeth
from that kiss you stuck right on me
yes I still have these ooey gooey gumdrops in my stomach
that you sent me and my heart dreams
tell me that those every so sweet nothings really mean everything
and then whisper them to me
tell me that these silly love games we play can stay just the same
after each day when we meet
I don't recall hearing it before. It's recorded to sound like an old record being played.

but this one is quite different, because of the fact that it includes Haley's unreleased tracks..
but... I barely know the first song.
Thanks for posting this. Even though how big a particular singer's a vocal range might be doesn't have much to do w/ whether or not I like that singer, these videos are kinda fun to watch. This one was especially cool because there are some parts of unreleased tracks I'd never heard before... and I'd heard the eight or so unreleased tracks that leaked last summer. That first one is so 1940's. I thought that was kinda cool to hear.

RE: Haley Reinhart's Voice
There are a lot of things that I'm drawn to in a singer. Phrasing, soulfulness, tone, taste in music, consistently being in tune, etc... Having a massive 4+ octave range isn't very high on the list. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th octaves make up the bulk of the human vocal range. Also, it's not that uncommon for men be able to sing part way down into the 1st octave or women to sing part way up into the 6th. So, that's roughly 5 octaves total combining both sexes.
As long as a singer can cover 2+ octaves though, range really isn't something that's limiting them much. Three octaves is great. When you're talking about female singers w/ a 4+ octave range, it's almost always because they can sing whistle tones in the upper 6th/7th octaves. Whistle tones are a nice extra if the singer has good control up there. I don't mind listening to Mariah sing whistle tone phrases. She has great control & her tone isn't overly piercing. But it's quite possible that a singer like Zonette Johnson could learn to sing whistle tones. Would that ability automatically make her a great singer or could it potentially be fatal to any small animal within earshot.
Since you guys are talking about vocal range, I was wondering if anyone knew whether Haley would be considered a Soprano or a Mezzo-Soprano. I'm fairly positive she's not a Contra-Alto. Just curious if anyone knows.

Haley's a normal alto .As for Zonette doing whistle tones I think that the CIA might consider using those as an enhanced interegation option for suspected terrorists.
