I watched a
full episode for the first time last night......
It's possible Haley's season has spoiled me for all these singing competitions, but I could barely stand any of the performances. To my ear there seemed to be a lot of 'wonky' notes, a ton of melisma and that performance of "Oh Darling"?
Don't get me started on how poor the cover of "Imagine" was, and not a word was said by the judges other than how exceptional the contestant was. The closest I got to enjoying a song was the 16 yr old girl....those brothers were ridiculous, the R&B guy wasn't bad, but very typical... very 'unspecial' over all IMO.
I read on TVLine a lot of people went OTT gaga over that Sasha(?)'s "Oh Darling", but IMO that was one of the more ridiculously overdramatic piece of indulgence I have heard as a cover of that song, not once during that performance did I believe what she was singing. That scream, it wasn't believable, it was is if it was inserted because Shakira told her to, it didn't feel natural to the song at all.... Sure I'm a Beatles'/Reinhart 'snob' for that song, but WTF was I missing so many people
luved that performance. Reading the comments, I was expecting ... I don't know? A good performance, at least, but

.... I agree with Slezak's take on it
Quote:The problem with her “Oh! Darling,” though, was that it read like she was playing the role of passionate rocker rather than actually being one. Well, and that screaming final note which was definitely more American Horror Story than American Idol.
Furthermore, where was the critique? This felt like the final four of AI, where the judges stopped being negative with their observations and throw platitudes on the contestants (since they made it this far and there is no reason left to throw shade...except for in Haley's case

)
There was plenty they could have pointed out, IMO, with these performances that should have been said, but all they could say was how thankful they got to hear such a great performance, and how fantastic everyone was (if everyone wins, no one wins IMO).... It was as if they were saying it was an honor to get to listen to these contestants....
If these guys were THAT remarkable...where are their Kelly or Carrie or Adam? .....
I just don't get what makes this show so much better than AI..... The coaching was interesting, but there would be no surprise at the execution because we are told what to look for in the performance, so when it came about ? meh....
I guess this is what I get for deciding to watch in the middle of the season. I thought not being invested might give me a more objective opinion, but all it did was make me wonder what all the talk is about this show in the first place.
(PS...even though I'm not a fan of Shakira's voice or tone...she's definitely easier to watch/listen to than Xtina.... although the length of time she took to find more platitudes to heap on every contestant reminded me of an abridged version of a Mariah 'critique'

I agree... I heard that too. Yet, here are the judges,
so grateful to be there to hear such great performances
